Four pandemic postcards
I. Dear Helen, I learned, as your daughter, that the sorrow that shadowed your beauty and light came in part from being born three months after your father, Antoni, died at age 40 of the Spanish flu, official cause of death pneumonia, in February 1920, at the tail end of the pandemic. It was said that Antoni may have built his own coffin; he was employed at a casket factory. At the time of your birth, your newly widowed mother, Josephine, had two other daughters under three, spoke no English, worked as a maid.

Love It or List It
As a millennial, I don’t have cable TV. It’s not that I can’t afford it (avocado toast isn’t that expensive), it just seems like the vestiges of a bygone era. These days, everything is on demand. You can watch whatever you want, whenever you want, for as long as you want, til you run out of content.

Following My Father
I still attended City College because I needed to finish some required courses in order to get my AA degree. I still took 18 units a semester. I still worked at the Oxford Hotel. I still drove my clunker of a car. Abdul and I still maintained our passionate relationship and interesting lives.

There's Always Money in The Banana Stand
Full of life lessons, crazy family drama, and telenovela levels of plot twists and turns, Arrested Development is truly a show worth binging. From the very first episode, you're thrown into this family's life as the head of the family and the Bluth's real estate development empire, George Bluth, is arrested for stealing millions of dollars and illegally building houses in Iraq for the infamous Saddam Hussein. Quite the story starter, am I right?

Norway's Breast Feeding Mafia
At the end of July 2019 my wife and I welcomed our son into the world. Apart from the obvious – and I am assuming typical worry and anxiety – it was a “trouble free” and profound experience. The jordmors or in English, the midwives, were amazing. The nurses too, impressive, dedicated, and kind. The women who assisted in the birth of our son, I shall never forget. The majority of caregivers who helped us adjust during the week we spent in the birth ward, they too have left a mark on my life.

Apostle
She stood on the weathered deck of this house she once loved, where she felt loved, imagining herself younger, wilder. Dancing through the bull dust, down over swatches of grass. The sting on her skin from rolling into the bindi bur that filled in more land than lawn. Lazy days on this deck, giggling at the Apostle birds chatter and play. Images and sounds, the smells, all shifting in the hot winds, contorting into unreliable memories.
