Journal Entry 2/16/21
Dear Journal, Here I am sitting here at about 10:30pm thinking about how much things have changed over the past year. It's crazy to think that this time last year I was getting ready to give birth to my amazing son and how his dad and I had rekindled our love and decided to be a family. It has defiantly be a rough year and things have defiantly changed and it has been hard to deal with some days.

Everyone Around Me Tried to Stop My Adoption.
When I became pregnant in 2008, the timing couldn’t be worse. I was in the middle of leaving the child’s father, just starting my third year at university, and barely had any income. But it’s also remarkably stupid to have unprotected sex with someone you’re trying to leave. In any case, it happened. Initially, the father and I decided to stay together, keep the pregnancy, and have a go at being a family. However, while we could make the finances work for year one, beyond that it was increasingly untenable.

The Mysterious Little Black Book
Aunt Lydia always had a little black book for as long as I could remember. I remember as a little girl asking my aunt, what was in her little black book. She would just simply laugh say everyone possess a black book. One day you will have one of your own. If everyone has one, then what do they write in them? I asked..... She replied to me, Stuff LOL..., Personal stuff!! I was like a daughter to aunt Lydia. She showed me and taught me a lot as a kid. I was always curious. I asked a lot of questions. I could always count on aunt Lydia to be on top of answering my every questions.

The Life
Melissa drove home from college with a degree in computer engineering in her small Toyota Camry that she saved for since the start of her college years. She was dreading going back home knowing what was waiting for her when she saw her mother again. She was an entirely different person than who she was when she left. She made sure she was accepted into a college as far away from home as possible to get away from the toxicity of her divorced parents’ relationship. It seemed like all they knew was how to get her hopes up then hurt her or push her away. It was like she was choosing the lesser evil when it came to picking where to return home to.

The Mule’s Last Apology
He sat there staring at it like it was going to jump up and bite him like a rattlesnake. Remy McAlister had a lot of experience with rattlesnakes growing up in the backwoods of Alabama. He and his twin brother, Rom, saw and caught their fair share traipsing around the woods behind their house. Their Mom’s father, whom the boys called Papaw in appropriate Alabama drawl, taught the twins how to catch those snakes and how to safely cut the heads and tails off. Much to the twins's mother’s disdain, they kept those tails in a Sketchers shoe box under their bunk bed.

The Little Black Book
Janet always heard the rumors, but she didn’t believe it until the day she finally came up on it herself. Sitting in her moms top drawer was the book that her grandma had always whispered about. Her mom always told her that this book did not exist, but she lied because the book sat amongst the papers pushed to the back of the drawer, cover worn and weathered. Janet slowly opened the little black book, and started reading through the pages. The names of her ancestors on her mom side over 4 generations was in the book. Her grandmother Adrian, great grandmother and those before her was listed. She quickly spotted the names of her mom, her sisters, and her brothers, but oddly she could not find her name. She wanted to ask your mother why her name not in this little black book, but she did not want to let her know that she had snooped and found it. What was the big secret being kept in this book. Was it that she did not actually belong to this family, because her name was nowhere to be found? Janet was highly upset and disgusted that her mom would keep such a secret from her. Is this why they always treated her different like she was some type of stepchild? Is that why she always felt unloved? Is that why her sisters never took her places? All of those negative thoughts raced through Janets mind. She contemplated all the reasons why her name was not in the Little black book and decided to go visit her grandmother. Her grandmother had always been honest with her after all she’s the one that mentioned the black book in the first place. Was she trying to hint to her what was really going on within the family? Janet had to find out.
