"Knives Out" is a story about a renowned detective, Benoit Blanc, who is called upon to investigate the death of a wealthy patriarch, Harlan Thrombey. Harlan's death, which appears to be a suicide, is surrounded by mystery, and his family members, who all had motives for wanting him dead, are suspects.
As Blanc delves deeper into the case, he uncovers a web of lies, secrets, and betrayals that threatens to tear the family apart. With each new piece of evidence, Blanc must determine who among the family members is guilty, and who is truly innocent.
Blanc's investigation begins with Harlan's family, who all had a motive for wanting him dead. Harlan's children, Linda and Walt, were struggling financially and stood to inherit a large sum of money upon his death. His granddaughter, Ransom, was deeply in debt and also stood to inherit a large sum. His grandson, Jacob, had been cut off financially by Harlan and had a history of drug addiction. And his nurse, Marta, had been promised a large sum of money in Harlan's will.
As Blanc interviews each family member, he discovers that they all have secrets and lies that they have been hiding. Linda and Walt had been embezzling money from Harlan's company for years, Ransom had been stealing from Harlan's personal accounts, Jacob had been involved in illegal activities, and Marta had a secret relationship with Harlan.
But Blanc soon realizes that the family's secrets go much deeper than he initially thought. Harlan's death was connected to a longstanding family feud, dating back decades. The family's greed, ambition, and desire for power had led them to betray each other, and ultimately led to Harlan's murder.
As Blanc continues to investigate, he discovers that Harlan's death was not a suicide, but a murder. He finds that Harlan had been poisoned by a rare and deadly toxin, and that the murder weapon was a knife from his own collection. Blanc's search for the killer leads him to a mysterious figure, known only as "The Son," who had been in contact with Harlan before his death.
As the truth is finally revealed, Blanc must race against time to bring the killer to justice. But with the stakes so high, and the family's past so shrouded in mystery, will Blanc be able to solve the crime before it's too late?
In a dramatic finale, Blanc finally uncovers the truth about Harlan's death, and the killer is revealed to be Marta, who had been promised a large sum of money in Harlan's will, but had been left out of the will at the last minute, and killed him out of greed. Blanc is able to prove her guilt and bring her to justice, but not before she tries to flee the country, setting up a thrilling chase.
