Here's how I found out about my pregnancy

Pregnancy can be a beautiful thing and even though it's a scary thought to know that something is growing inside of you, you also feel like you are bonding with something that you created.

This is my first time being pregnant, and it was very unexpected when I found out.

It was Children's Day in South Korea, and the rain was pouring down a lot. I had the day off from work, since it was a public holiday so my partner and I decided to go out.

We went to our usual area in Seoul: Myeongdong. This area is usually a popular location for tourists, because there are a lot of street food stalls here and shops.

I needed to get a haircut, so I went to a hairdresser there and I was daring enough to cut my hair way shorter than I should have.

Rain usually makes me feel sleepy, so my energy was very low at this point. My partner suggested that we get Korean sausage soup as takeout and to eat it at home. This soup is called Sundae.

I wasn't sure if I wanted to drink soju with my meal (since it's usually a traditional combination here), because for some reason I had an instinct to buy a pregnancy test, since I was a few days late. We bought one from the convenience store and I carried out the steps for the test. I was in the shower as we waited for the results, and my partner was checking if a line was coming through.

When I got out of the shower, it was there; the faded red line. We were both surprised and looked at each other in shock. My partner was eating Sundae soup and nervously scratching his head as I stood there and awkwardly announced it.

We both wanted to have children, but our initial plan was to start trying later down the line. We both called our families to tell them and get advice, and both sides were ecstatic with the news.

The next day we went to the woman's clinic so I could get a scan. The doctor spoke to me about everything, and even though I did a scan, it was too early to see anything. She advised me to come back two weeks later.

I was super nervous for the next two weeks, and extra cautious with everything I did and ate. I did several more tests and the line appeared on all of the tests.

The date finally arrived and when I had my second scan, we were able to see the tiny bean. Both my partner and I were teary and overjoyed. We decided to nickname the baby Sundae; since that is the meal that we ate when we found out.

Throughout the months we went to every scan together and kept on seeing our little bean turn into something bigger. I am now at the stage where I know that we will be having a baby girl, her legs are long (like mine) and she is lightly kicking, which I can feel occasionally. I am counting down the days until I face the greatest challenge; labour.

The point is, life will never go as planned. Things do happen for a reason and excluding the obvious biology here of how we created our baby, we are blessed that we are going to have one.

But of course life changes in many ways, and there will be a few challenges along the way. No matter how prepared we will be, we will also learn new things from our experience.
