Going From No Visitors To Four Grandchildren Over For The Weekend

From few and far between, we got to spend time with grandchildren, on a weekend in March of 2022.

Two grandsons came with their parents on Friday night. The eight-year-old, the youngest, was hoping to go on the anniversary trip with his parents. It was not a trip for him. It was evening and the boys decided they would have frozen pizza as we had already eaten dinner.

They had eaten also but it was a while ago and they would soon be starving! They are growing boys so they will eat dinner and eat again – pizza. I have found that pizza is almost an anytime food with kids. They went to bed early and the youngest woke grandpa up to watch television with him for a short time during the night.

There was some roughhousing on Saturday and the youngest cried and was hurt and upset. I had the conversation with the oldest (15) about how he probably doesn’t know his strength and his brother is a lot younger (8) and smaller.

The youngest appeared to feel better and the older one said, his little brother was probably just trying to get him in trouble as they do that kind of thing all the time and he didn’t do anything different. I reminded him to think about how that felt when his older brother would wrestle with him. He only remembers how his older brother was his friend and he got to fight him too. Funny how the memory works.

He had an older brother, that was a wrestler and was about 7 or 8 years older. I can't imagine him never getting hurt. But that is what he claimed. I was there quite a few times when roughhousing happened!

There is never much getting hurt that occurs but it reminded us of another grandson, who is 10 now. When he was 8, he would be a difficult kid to watch as he was so emotional. He would go between never wanting to leave our house to wanting to go home right now! Different kid at 10.

The youngest then had some coughing and it kept him up during the night on Saturday night too. It was Grandma’s turn to get him settled back in with television before I went back to bed. When I checked on him, he was asleep with the television on.

The granddaughters arrived on Saturday afternoon. One of our granddaughters may have fibromyalgia. She is having headaches and body aches and she fits many of the other symptoms. She said they are currently ruling out some things, but the doctor believes that is what is going on.

She was told she may have contracted that from her long-term struggles with headaches. She had brain surgery several years ago when she was still a young teen.

Today, I taught her and her older sister Reiki, something she can do for herself that may help the headaches. She received Level I and I told her that if she wants to go further to practice level I first for a while.

This morning I took another grandson to church. He is 16 and goes to an Orthodox church. The true church in his mind. The one on the same block as their house is not the true church. He is fasting and eating mainly rice and beans and potatoes this week. Since he can cost me considerable money as a teen at six feet something, I think fasting is a good thing and I may just celebrate his fasting today.

I wonder if there is any way to get the church to fast more often?

The youngest grandson rode with me as he had done some work (dusting) to earn money for a Beyblade. It is funny how every Beyblade he has had is the best and how well it works in battles and, and, and. I paid for half and he paid for half. It was $11.00. That was the least expensive as some are 25 and even 50.

He was so excited about his choice of toy and was so proud of being able to earn part of it himself. While in Walmart he told me how he has the best traction on his shoes of any other shoes there. That was because I wanted him to wear his boots and he said his shoes have better traction!

Grandpa is doing intermittent fasting, where he doesn’t eat before 10 a.m. and he doesn’t eat anything after 6:00 p.m. This means we don’t eat more than one meal a day together on most days. This is alright with me too as I cook way less. And considering I have been cooking more since the pandemic, I am okay with his intermittent fasting, just as long as I don't have to do it too.

The girls didn’t get up until around 11:00 on Sunday morning. I thought that was mainly teen girls. I guess not as they are 21 and 22. They drank coffee and after Reiki, they were on their way home, by way of the Dairy Queen with their grandpa and the two boys.

We can go for months without any company and on the same weekend, we get four. Grandpa said, “I just spent $50. at the DQ.” Then I said, well, I spent $100. last night. Four of us went to a movie and picked up fast food before the show. No more said. I guess his gift card for DQ won’t last him until summer!

When you are retired, money can be an issue. Thankfully we do not have company every weekend and with the pandemic, it has been few and far between. We still make sure our family is thought of on birthdays and Christmas with a card and a gift or a gift card.

The weekend was a success. After some teasing and hurt feelings with the youngest, everyone is settled in school or back at home. Grandpa had fun with the grandchildren. All of them. He likes to tease and he got plenty of that in! Me, I just love to have them around! To catch up on their lives.
