You want to do something special to celebrate Mother’s Day with the woman who has helped shape who you are today, but you don’t know where to start. Let Your Mom Decide What to Do

One of my favorite things about Mother’s Day is getting to do something I really enjoy, whether it’s catching up with friends over brunch or going on an adventure. When deciding how you want to celebrate your mom, don’t forget that it should be something she enjoys and not what you want. One of my family traditions is making Sunday brunch together as a way for all of us to relax and unwind after a busy week; it may not be everyone’s idea of fun, but it always feels great! It also gives us plenty of time to catch up on our days.

Do a fun activity together if you’re in the same home.

If you’re in the same home and want to do something fun, get outside! Whether it’s going for a hike, having an outdoor BBQ or just hanging out at your local park, getting some exercise is sure to make both of you feel great. Plus, there are plenty of group activities (mini-golf anyone?) that are easy on Mom while still being memorable. You’ll remember it as more than just another day; think about something different or unique that can help make your time together memorable. Do something meaningful: If you aren’t going to be in same location with your mom on her special day consider doing something meaningful instead of gifting her with things she doesn’t need like clothes or knick-knacks.

Make your mom’s meals for the day.

If you’re truly at a loss for how to celebrate Mother’s Day, here’s one thing you can do: make your mom dinner on Sunday night. Spend some time in her kitchen, learn her cooking quirks and tips, ask questions about why she does things certain ways. By making her dinner yourself, you show that you care about honoring her and appreciate everything she does for you. Plus, it'll be an experience that will help both of you get closer together. You don't have to prepare an elaborate feast—just doing something like having dinner or lunch together is good enough.

Connect over video call if you’re in separate homes

This is important. Face-to-face time is important for all relationships, but especially for mothers and daughters, who are often separated by distance or lifestyle. Schedule a regular video call between you and your mom. It could be just once a week or once every couple of weeks – it doesn’t have to be too frequent, but it’s something nice that you can do together without traveling too far from home. Then make sure you actually use it; research has shown that people who schedule time with their parents don’t follow through on their promises as much as those who communicate regularly over video calls.

Plan an activity for your video call for a special surprise

Planning an activity for your video call with Mom is always a great way to celebrate. Whether you choose skydiving or knitting, it doesn’t matter as long as you make sure she’s on board before planning an activity. Also, if at all possible, it’s important to share her big day with someone else. She loves you, of course—but there are some days that are better shared than celebrated alone. When sharing Mom’s special day with another person—preferably another family member—it gives you another set of eyes and ears on deck to help keep track of anything going wrong.

Give, send, or drop off a gift if you can

A lot of people get confused about what to give as gifts for mothers on Mother’s Day. For some, it’s hard because they don’t have a lot of money. But then again, most moms will tell you that you don’t need to spend a lot of money on them. As long as you remember them and appreciate their love, that is more than enough.
