Whooping cough kills a baby as cases rise
Baby dies from whooping cough as cases increase

According to Public Health Scotland, a kid in Scotland under the age of one passed away after contracting whooping cough.
From January to July of this year, the FDA reported that there had been over 5,200 verified cases, according to preliminary data.
In 2023, there were just 73 instances recorded in Scotland; however, cases in the UK and Europe have been increasing lately.
In Scotland, the last known whooping cough death occurred in 2015.
Experts claim that the infection, sometimes referred to as "100-day cough" or pertussis, is a cyclical illness that peaks every three to five years.
In 2012 and 2013, 3,084 cases were found within a two-year span, marking the last notable outbreak.
England has nine whooping cough deaths as cases increase.
"We haven't slept for weeks due to the persistent whooping cough."
Most cases, according to the most recent PHS data, were people who were at least 15 years old.
However, the age group between 10 and 14 years old has the highest incidence rate, which is the rate of new cases during a certain period for those who are at risk.
This is the PHS's first-ever monthly report, and it will be available "for as long as whooping cough continues to circulate at the currently observed levels".
The recent increase in instances has been attributed, according to the UK Health Security Agency, to both a gradual drop in vaccination uptake and the extremely low number of infections observed during the Covid epidemic.
PHS's chief of immunization and vaccine, Dr. Sam Ghebrehewet, told the BBC
According to Scotland News, the peak of infections is likely to occur in the autumn.
Whooping cough: what is it?
The initial symptoms resemble those of a cold, including a sore throat and runny nose.
The infection may progress to brief episodes of coughing, usually worst at night, after approximately a week.
Sneezes and coughs carry the bacterial illness.
Whooping cough can affect people of any age, but it is more dangerous for infants and small children.
Since November 2023, whooping cough has claimed the lives of nine babies in England, according to the UK Health Security Agency.
