What goes on during online classes.

What a student with dyslexia and ADD does during online classes

By Manny FKPublished 5 years ago 2 min read

The University dream has not always felt real, that was until worked my ass off to get the qualifications needed.

I take great pride in what I have had to overcome in order to get here. Being dyslexic and having ADD has not made it easy in the slightest. I have had to face great adversity and overcome the difficulties that my gifts bring.

University is stressful under what used to be normal conditions. But ever since Covid-19 took over, universities have had to adapt to a new way of learning. Thus, pushing students to learn and study in an entirely new way.

Now I am not going to pretend like I know anything/everything about writing (dyslexia does not help the fact either) but it is something I have always liked to do. It helps me deal with most of my problems and it brings me clarity! And in all honesty, I want to do more of.

This page is sort of going to be a diary for what I go through during my university experience. I want to inspire people to write more, if someone like myself can do it, trust me when I say you can too!!

So here is some of what I do when in “online school”:

1. Wonder what is going on outside. No really!! To the point that every little noise distracts me, to the point where I look like a bobblehead on calls.

2. How much of this stuff is actually relevant? (all of it)

3. S**t I should have been listening! (messages friend to see what I missed)

4. Remembers that having special software available means I have been recording the lecture since the start.

5. What will I have for dinner?

6. Oh, someone has their doggo with them.

7. What can I do to become a millionaire?

8. Should I be taking notes on this?

9. Remembers for the second time that the audio is being recorded so I can catch up at any time and take notes on my own time.

10. Getting distracted by what everyone else is doing.

11. Finally, trying to figure out what is in the background of everyone else.

Now the last point seems odd but let me explain. I know how pointless that information is. Do I care? NO! Does it give me any knowledge of what is happening? Also no. The reality is subconsciously I am capturing most of the information and I will remember the valuable information. I also record my lectures so I can always fill in any gaps of information.

So, if being distracted and focused on the entirely wrong thing helps, why not focus on the fact that my lecture has either read or currently reading Fifty Shades of grey?
