The Radiant Lamp – The Legacy of Uthman ibn Affan (RA)
A Journey of Generosity, Preservation of the Qur'an, and Unshakable Patience

Uthman ibn Affan (RA), the third Caliph of Islam, the son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and one of the ten companions promised Paradise (Ashara Mubashshara), was a shining star in the early Islamic era. Known for his immense generosity, soft-heartedness, and unwavering dedication to Islam, he left behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
Early Life: Born into the noble Umayyah clan of the Quraysh tribe, Uthman (RA) was a respected and wealthy merchant even before Islam. His honesty, modesty, and charitable nature made him beloved among the people. He accepted Islam through the efforts of Abu Bakr (RA) and became one of the earliest converts.
Connection with the Prophet (PBUH): Uthman (RA) married the Prophet’s daughter, Ruqayyah (RA). After her death, the Prophet (PBUH) gave him his second daughter, Umm Kulthum (RA), in marriage. For this rare honor, he was known as "Dhul-Nurayn" – the Possessor of Two Lights.
A Model of Generosity: Uthman (RA) was known for his immense charitable acts. During a severe drought in Madinah, he purchased a well named Bi’r Rumah from a Jew and dedicated it for public use. During the expedition of Tabuk, he provided 1,000 camels, 100 horses, and a large amount of gold and silver for the Muslim army. The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Nothing will harm Uthman after what he has done today.”
Compilation of the Qur’an: As Islam spread and linguistic differences arose, Uthman (RA) feared the unity of the Qur’an might be lost. He formed a committee under the leadership of Zaid ibn Thabit (RA) to compile the Qur’an in the original dialect used during the Prophet’s lifetime. These copies were then sent to major Islamic regions, unifying the recitation and preserving the authenticity of the Qur’an. This version is known as the "Uthmani Mushaf."
Patience and Forbearance: His final years as Caliph were marred by internal unrest. False accusations and political conspiracies surrounded his leadership. Despite having the power, Uthman (RA) chose not to fight back to avoid bloodshed among Muslims. His house was besieged for several days, yet he continued to recite the Qur’an in peace.
Martyrdom: In 35 AH, rebels attacked his house. Even though many companions offered to defend him, Uthman (RA) forbade them to raise swords. While reading the Qur’an, he was martyred—his blood spilling on the pages. His martyrdom left the Muslim world in deep sorrow, but his sacrifice became a lesson in patience, humility, and steadfastness.
Legacy: The life of Uthman ibn Affan (RA) remains a guiding light for those who strive for righteousness. His contributions to Islam—his wealth spent in Allah’s way, his efforts to preserve the Qur’an, and his peaceful sacrifice—continue to benefit the Ummah today.
Conclusion: From his humble beginnings to becoming a beacon of leadership, Uthman ibn Affan (RA) reminds us that true strength lies not just in wealth or power, but in generosity, steadfast faith, and love for unity. His life story is a flame that continues to illuminate the hearts of believers around the world.
