My $50K, 15-Month Master's in Finance in 5 Minutes 🎓⌛
After undergrad, many folks consider going to business school to make themselves more competitive in the job market or learn special skills needed to succeed in business. To help make your decision more informed, I'd recommend reading this 5-minute grad school alternative. A couple of years ago, I went to business school to get a master's in finance, and I'd like to boil the $50K price tag and 15-month time commitment down to a 5-minute read. You may be thinking, "I want a master's in business administration (MBA), or so this doesn't really apply." Maybe, but hear me out. This list may convince you otherwise.

Stuck in my career.
I never wanted my Doctorate degree. Growing up I was never that person who said they wanted to go for their PhD. It was engrained in me that I would go for my Bachelors, that I had no choice in. But I never wanted to go beyond undergrad school; I was always that person who said I am done with school after my Bachelors. I had gone straight to undergrad after HS and it was exhausting. I really thought I would be able to use my degree and start my career but that turned out to not be the case. It was not that I had a degree I could not use but that no one would give me the chance to gain experience. I wanted my career so badly I decided to go back for my master’s to hopefully gain some notice and break into my field. If you can’t do go back to school.

My road to my Doctorate.
Starting my Doctorate program. I got accepted into my program in the summer of 2017 and was so terrified I put it off until January 2018. I was still nervous to start when the day came but I was determined. It was not an easy start though. My school started us out with an intro class and a regular full credit class. I had the best professors, but it was a time to learn and get used to the program. I needed to learn to write at that level and the classes were only seven weeks long; things moved fast. If you are not disciplined and on top of things you can get left behind or lost very easily. I set reminders for myself of when I would complete assignments and really stuck to it. Having that discipline was a true-life saver in this program. I ended up with an A in one class and 89.5 not rounded up but a B+ in the second. I was not happy with the B+ but it ended up being one of only two that I received in the entire program.

Breaking Generational Cycles: What Is It Like To Be The First College Graduate In Your Family?

From Amish to MBA
I grew up Amish, and I wrote a short story called Amish Memories. Growing up I used to do the strawberry sales and baked goods from the back of the buggy or the side of the road and even carried the baked good to the neighbors and as a young 5 year old started charging $3.25 for the pies instead of $3.00 that my aunts asked me to charge for them. That was my first entrepreneurial efforts, to, instead of relying on tips, I was now charging a delivery fee.

Picking Your Doctoral Topic
Before I begin spitting the advice, let me introduce myself. I am Dr. Jhoanna Amigable. I am a Doctor of Business Administration with a concentration in Healthcare Administration. I am currently a business analyst in a public healthcare facility and worked full-time (and then some) during my doctoral journey. I'm probably like you - I have a family, friends, a career, pets, etc. etc. and I've been trying to navigate this thing called "adulthood" for quite some time. Balancing anything extra on top of a career and family is far from easy, but it's possible! I have a passion for helping people get through things that might be weighing heavy on their shoulders (like a doctoral dissertation) and leaving a positive effect on people that I encounter. So I hope this helps you in one way or another.
