Read A Book .... You Never Know What You Might Find Out ... Again

I Am Taking The Title Of A Seven Days In Post and Using It As A Prompt

Introduction

I just say this on Seven Days In and thought it is quite a good prompt to tell you some things that I have found from the books that I recently read. Some are fiction but many are not. I do veer between many types of books and often am shocked and amazed by the sort of things that I come across.

The Seven Days In Post From 2017

It's World Record Store day, my mate Jim wants a copy of The Queen Symphony and I fancy the new "The The" single, the first new music from Matt Johnson in 15 years and it's as good as ever.

I'm still working through "The Age of Bowie" by Tony Morley and today I found out how Marc Bolan (at the time Marc Feld) settled on his surname. Apparently, he took the first two letters of one of his heroes' first names and the last three letters of his surname, which shows more than a little ingenuity, that hero was Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan also changed his surname from Zimmerman to Dylan taking the first name of one of his heroes, Welsh stream-of-consciousness poet Dylan Thomas (I love "Under Milk Wood").

I've included the Dubwood Allstars' "Under Dubwood" which I never tire of (but doesn't, which takes Richard Burton's introduction and uses the soundtrack which is the same as John Holt's "Ali Baba". Can you how my mind wanders?

Anyway, it's a beautiful day, and I have vinyl to buy.

Have a wonderful Saturday everyone.

And Now We Are In 2023

Since I started writing on Vocal I have used my blog for semi-documenting the books that I read, although obviously, I was doing a bit of that on Seven Days In in 2017.

The thing is when you drop into a book, you never know what you are going to leave it with. It may just be an amazing story or it may be the knowledge of something that you were previously unaware of or something that may benefit you.

The book I am reading at the moment is "The Men Who Stare At Goats" by Jon Ronson

This is full of things that range from the interesting to the ridiculous, such as men in the American Military who posited that because atoms are mostly space then we should be able to walk through "solid" objects with no problem. This seemed to result in a lot of sore heads.

Then there are the men who can supposedly kill goats by simply staring at them. There are lots of contrived situations and one where Ronson is actually mentally a physically assaulted by one guy in a vaguely controlled situation.

We hear tales of innocent men from Manchester ending up in Guantanamo Bay simply because of the color of their skin, and then being subjected to various experimental weird torture techniques involving things like silent sound and subliminal messages.

The book is both entertaining and frightening detailing what happened between the FBI and the Branch Davidians at Waco. This was seen as an experiment by the Top Brass to use their techniques on someone that they had decided was evil.

This is just one book that I am reading.

Any book that you pick up may be full of interesting information, I mean it may not, but you never know.

As you can see from this piece, two books have provided me with a lot of facts that I was unaware of, and that I am glad that I now know.

Conclusion

Always pick up a book and read, and you will almost certainly benefit from it.

Excellent! Did you know there is an alternative to Ama$on for books? It’s Bookshop.org and independent bookstores get a yearly disbursement of profits.

  • Another interesting article. Great to hear Richard's voice.
