Planning to study in Germany? Here is what Nepali students should expect.
If you, as a Nepalese, are planning to study abroad in Germany and are wondering about the differences between Germany and Nepal, this blog is for you.

If you are planning to move to Germany to study, live, or work, this blog will be really valuable to you. We wrote this blog to make things easier for you guys, dear Nepali students. Germany is one of the safest and stable countries with a high standard, amazing working conditions, and a free and open-minded population that takes their privacy seriously. Germany also has 4 distinct weather systems with temperatures varying during the year. So, keep on reading as we will dive deeper into Germany’s culture.
Language
The big differences between Nepal and Germany are their respective language. German is the official language of Germany, while Nepali speakers well Nepali. You should be able to speak/write fluently-ish in German before you study. Of course, some people do speak English there, but it is better not to count on people speaking English and do your best to learn their language and culture associated with said language. Which brings us to our next point.
German people
German people are individualistic, respect other people, and really enjoy their freedom. Germany is a democratic parliamentary nation, which has enshrined the basic human liberty such as freedom of speech, freedom of expression, freedom of belief, right to dignity, and many others. Of course, Nepal also technically has all of that freedom, but in Germany, those freedoms are enshrined in culture, into people. Nepali value tradition and familial responsibility, while German people value individual rights, and at the same time, families and friends. They are modern, open, hospitable, and free-minded people.
Please note that it is not our opinion that one is better than the other; we are simply trying to present facts about these two countries.
Education
Education in Germany is better than in Nepal. It is a fact, unfortunately. They have universities that rank among the top 100 universities on our planet. It is also a direct correlation of valuing good education with the prosperity of the German people. Education in Germany costs little to no money (to national students, not international students). They have a huge, educated workforce that teaches/transfers their skills to the next generation to better their nation.
Healthcare and quality of life.
Healthcare in Germany is highly subsidized by the German government. They have a multi-tiered healthcare insurance system that covers almost all Germans. Of course, the healthcare system is also a top-notch system and is among the top 100 in the entire world. Not only Compulsory healthcare insurance (GKV - funded by employer and employee), but there is also a private health insurance system (PKV – for high-earners, self-employed individuals who are not covered by GKV). So, yeah healthcare system of Germany is one of the best in the world.
Not only healthcare, quality of life in Germany is also top-notch. In terms of HDI, Germany ranks fourth in the world with 0.959 (alongside Sweden – 0.959). The quality of food, education, services, infrastructure, and transportation is top-notch.
Food
Germany has its own distinctive food culture. They place value on healthy and traditional dishes. They value meat, potatoes, bread, vegetables, and desserts. And of course, sausages. They have amazing traditional cuisine such as Currywurst, Sauerbraten, Pretzel and Mustard Dumplings, and many others. So, when you move to Germany to study/live/work, you will have direct access to these amazing cuisines.
And don’t forget, you can drink water from the tap in Germany.
Transportation
Germany has a vast and efficient transportation system. They have a vast network of public railway systems (both high-speed and low-speed railway systems), efficient airways, buses, trams, and underground trains. So, if you want to go somewhere, you can use any of them.
European Union (EU)
Of course, we cannot talk about Germany without talking about the EU. The EU comprises 27 countries, all collectively valuing peace, prosperity, and growth of all member states. Germany is one of those member states, and it is by far the biggest nation in the EU in terms of GDP. Germany uses the Euro as its currency. The Euro is extremely stable, and that is why it is the 2nd most used currency, only after the USD, in international settlements and as a reserve currency.
So, yeah, when you graduate or when you move to work/live there, you will have direct access to one of the biggest nations (in terms of GDP) in the EU.
Of course, not only that, but being part of the workforce of a nation that is a member state of the EU has its advantages. One of the biggest advantages of being part of the EU is freedom of movement among and between other member states. Of course, you will require a German visa (as an international citizen) that offers this merit. Once you get that visa, you can use it to travel (to work/live) between member countries.
Politics & Religion
Germany has a multiparty democratic government institution. German people value progressive liberalism that promotes free market, social, and environmental welfare. That doesn’t mean most people go to one basket or the other. Like in every place, it is in the spectrum. Some people are liberal, while some are conservative. Germany is one of the biggest countries trying to move toward a renewable energy system. And we hope they succeed. The major religious makeup of the demographics is: Catholic, Protestant, and no religious affiliation. German people are pretty open-minded. So, you can practice any religion you want in Germany.
Again, please note that we are not trying to say one ideology/religion is better than another; we are simply stating facts.
We hope this blog has given you some insights about Germany, the German people, and their culture. Germany is by no means a cheap country; it is expensive to live in, but it is one of the best countries that offers highest of the highest standard of living.
