If you’ve ever found your home internet slowing down when everyone’s online, help is on the way.

From September 2025, NBN Co is introducing a major speed upgrade that could change how we work, stream, and stay connected at home. These changes are designed to meet the demands of modern households, and the benefits are pretty exciting.

But what exactly is happening? And how will it affect you?

Here’s everything you need to know.

The big upgrade explained

NBN Co is launching new, faster internet speed tiers for homes connected via Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC). These are the NBN’s highest-performing connection types, and millions of homes across Australia are already connected, or are eligible to upgrade.

Here’s what’s changing:

  • New 500/50 Mbps plan
  • New 750/50 Mbps plan
  • Home Ultrafast (existing 1000 Mbps download) will see upload speeds double from 50 to 100 Mbps
  • A brand new top-tier plan called Home Hyperfast, with 2000 Mbps (2 Gbps) download and 200 Mbps upload

These are the maximum wholesale speeds offered by NBN Co to internet providers. Your actual speeds will depend on your provider, your chosen plan, and your home setup.

Who gets the benefits?

These upgrades are only available to customers connected via FTTP or HFC. If you're unsure what connection type you have, you can check your address using the NBN Co address checker.

If you're on a different connection (like FTTC or FTTN) you may still be eligible for a free fibre upgrade by ordering a high-speed plan (NBN 100 or higher) through a participating provider. This is part of NBN Co’s ongoing fibre upgrade program.

So even if you’re not already on FTTP, faster speeds may still be within reach.

How faster speeds improve your daily internet use

These new speed tiers are built for how we live and work today. Here's how they can make a difference in your home:

Remote work

Smoother video calls, faster uploads, and better performance with cloud-based tools

Streaming

Watch 4K or even 8K content on multiple devices with no buffering

Gaming

Reduced lag and faster downloads for game updates and multiplayer sessions

Busy households

Everyone can stream, browse, and work at the same time, and all without fighting over bandwidth

It’s about future proofing out internet needs and servicing our connected homes. Just think of the smart TVs, devices, security systems, and more all online at once.

Do you have to do anything?

If you’re already on a high-speed plan like Home Ultrafast, and your provider adopts the new speed tiers, you may receive an automatic upgrade.

For example, an increase in upload speed from 50 to 100 Mbps.

However, most customers will need to switch to a new plan to access the 500 Mbps, 750 Mbps, or 2000 Mbps options. Your provider will communicate the options available to you.

If you’re currently on FTTC or FTTN, you can also check if you’re eligible for a free FTTP upgrade when you sign up for an NBN 100 or higher plan through a participating provider.

The cost of faster internet

NBN Co has introduced a new wholesale pricing model, starting in July 2025.

While some existing plans will stay at current pricing levels, the new high-speed tiers (like Home Hyperfast at 2000/200 Mbps) will come at a higher wholesale cost, around $115/month to providers.

Retail pricing will vary, but consumers can expect to pay around $150–$200/month for the fastest tiers, depending on the provider, speed, and included features.

Businesses get a boost too

If you run a small business or work from home, the news gets even better. NBN Co is also launching business-grade high-speed plans, including a 2000 Mbps download / 500 Mbps upload option.

These business plans will include:

  • Higher upload speeds
  • Priority fault support
  • More consistent performance during peak times

Perfect for digital agencies, media professionals, remote teams, or anyone who relies on fast and reliable internet for business-critical work.

The bigger picture

This move is part of NBN Co’s long-term effort to prepare for a more connected future in Australia. Think smart homes, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and whatever comes next in digital life. No matter where you are in Australia, you should be able to find a provider who can help you access faster internet. Take a look at Swoop and their nbn plans.

The goal? Make sure Australian homes and businesses aren’t left behind as our data needs continue to grow.

Will your household or business benefit from these upgrades?

Key takeaways

  • New high-speed NBN plans (500/50, 750/50, 2000/200 Mbps) will launch in September 2025, for homes on FTTP and HFC connections
  • Upload speeds on Home Ultrafast plans will increase from 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps
  • Fibre upgrades are available for many FTTC and FTTN homes—triggered by ordering a higher-speed plan
  • New business plans include a 2000/500 Mbps option with improved support and performance
