The Best of the Best
Dear Ms. Garst, Even though I just met you this year, it feels like I’ve gained so much trust and knowledge. In my previous years, math wasn’t my strongest subject, for a long time other students were better at math than me. They learned so fast while I learned pretty slow. Not until I met you this year did I gain this confidence in myself that I can learn as fast as other kids. You helped me when I struggled and you made me feel comfortable in case I made a mistake.

THE DREAMS OF AFRICAN HEROES
MAKING THE RIGHT PATHWAY TO SUCCESS It is with great thoughts of decades ago when I realized that the journey to success is a herculean task as it requires a lot of dedication, commitment, perseverance, and patience when underprivileged and neglected children decided to pursuit their dreams to success. As the community people in villages and towns nationwide realized the importance of education and wanted their children to be amongst the highly educated in the African continent, and to become useful men and women in the society with intention of making their villages and town famous for bringing up elites to take up prominent positions in governance of their countries. In order to proceed with this project, the elders in the community made personal financial contributions to sponsor the education of children going to school from primary school to secondary school and up to university. As the awareness of education and learning has intensified the elders, went the extra mile to create additional source of raising funds for the educational project by identifying and communicating with charitable organizations, locally and international, philanthropists to come to their aid to support the venture so that more opportunities will be extended to the underprivileged children in their communities. Starting the road to academic learning for the children was tough and rough as they were not exposed to education methods of learning, gradually as the children understand and appreciate the essence of education, what it means and to what benefits it would be to themselves, the communities and their countries in general they became eager to learn and concentrate on their education. Although it was challenging, but as time goes on, they realized it was valuable and interesting venture. The children were motivated by their teachers and lecturers, therefore they were able to understand and learn new things, develop ideas and knowledge very quickly as they showed commitment to the course of interest. Notwithstanding the difference in cultures and ethnic tribes’ barriers as the children develop and become familiar with themselves, they make friends in school that boasted the learning environment as they play together and make funs as the relationship builds up. Many of the children were able to develop their interest of learning difference languages to improve their communication network to ease their stress and problems in speaking to each other in school and outside. The interaction became very friendly and pleasant as they play together, and took the opportunity to learn either of the various official languages; English, French, Arabic etc, etc of the respective countries. It also serves as a means to develop and improve their vocabularies in the languages as they know new words and their meanings, understands good and bad habits and those to ignore because those bad habits or tricks are not acceptable in the mist of good and disciplined people in the society. The children used this forum to learn and gradually develop and improve their vocabularies and learning habits. As the children progress in the school academic years, they are complied to do assignments, sit to tests and examinations to assess their competencies and capacities for justification and promotion to the next classes until the complete primary, secondary and university education and obtain our respective recognized certificates awarded to them. Going to the universities, the students decide on their course of studies e.g B.Sc degrees Business Administration, Accounting & Finance, Human Resource & Management, procurement & Logistics to list a few as their aspiration or ambition is to become top business management executives, these courses are normally pursued for 4 years and during the vacations many of them are engaged by some prominent companies as internship trainees in their various fields of academic studies to gain practical experiences, with the progressive trainings, they were able to acquire some administrative skills that enable them to secure employments after graduating from the universities probably with distinction grades. With this first academic success they are now confident of a new life in their era has began and they should continue to strive to achieve more successes. Moving from the learning institutions to business environment is also not too easy, because the culture and focus is making money for the progress, development and expansion of business, therefore everything is time management, maximum productivity and profit making concepts. Hence, there is division of labour, responsibilities and accountability to the management. You execute your functions according to the policies, procedures and guidance of the company. This management system have proved to be very effective, useful and productive in the overall performance of the business, therefore created positive impact in our career development and capacity building. As we spent years of services with the company, our dedication, loyalty, efficiencies and competences were recognized and compensated with awards of merits by annual increments and promotions to higher positions in the company. We are now applauded, therefore feel bless to demonstrate and express our profound gratitude, appreciation and thanks to our community elders both in the villages and towns in any of the countries in the continent of Africa, the local and foreign donors that have in diverse ways continue to contribute towards the sustainable development and improvement of the education standards and the opportunities provided for underprivileged children in our continent as we all hope to realize the best of their achievements in the immediate, short and long terms plans to benefit of themselves, their communities and country in general. We have no doubts in our minds that the beneficiaries of this laudable venture will surely reciprocate by offering the services to the people, communities and the countries in general, and where available opportunities to support development in socio-economic strives of the villages or towns in their country it will be their pleasure, therefore we have tagged their rewards to achievement “PAY BACK TIME”. Gender inequality in education
Gender inequality refers to the variability in the conditions that women and men encounter when exercising their full human rights. In 2015, 193 nations agreed to the Sustainable Development Agenda (2030), which comprises 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), several of which address gender inequality to varying degrees. Goal-4 specifically focuses on education, in particular, stressing the importance of vigorously striving for universal education goals. Goal-5 emphasizes gender equality and women empowerment that ensures the equal participation of women in the process of decision-making process, social, political, or economic. Goal-8 promotes and encourages the creation of a healthy and positive work environment for women that will upraise sustainable economic growth. The premise behind the aforementioned commitments is that granting women equal access to education, as well as political and economic bodies, will assist in the development of more sustainable economies and societies.

Road Trip
Any teacher who has ever worked in a classroom or a lab or a gym full of unseasoned learners and not-yet-fully-developed human beings for 32 years is bound to have a few stories. These stories may come from the classroom itself and involve one or two students in particular, or they may come from the “out of school” experience involved when whole classes of students venture head-long, into the big wide world. I certainly have had both types of experiences (and everything in between), thus I also have the stories that go with those sorts of adventures. In the account that follows, I would like to relate some muses of my ten favorite entries in the School Field Trip ledger. Of course, I was involved with dozens, if not hundreds, more than what I have mentioned here, but many of them were matter-of-fact, and simply followed the book – going much as planned, innocuous in their process and procedure and predictable in their outcome. A few, on the other hand, stick out vividly in my mind because of one or more incidents involving one or more students, or because of the destination, or because of the mode of travel to and from the destination, or because of the complexity, magnitude and scope of organizing and proceeding with the trip itself. During my teaching tenure, I was primarily a teacher of physical education for much of the time, and thus, was involved with coaching a variety of sports for a variety of male and female age-groups. I estimate that I likely took more than 250 sports-related road trips during that time. While teaching in Canada (Saskatchewan and British Columbia), I was involved with a minimum of one class-related trip (Museum visits, drama performances, etc.) per semester and at least one whole-school-related outing (Skiing trips, camping, hiking, etc.) per school year. The inclusion of these activities increases my field-trip tally by another 100. Add to that, the 30 plus shopping trips I took with my Foods & Nutrition students while teaching in China, and my career total stands at nearly 400 field trips taken during my teaching career. That’s an average of over 10 times per year that I was given the opportunity to be involved with the fabrication of some very interesting tales of student adventure (or possibly misadventure). Anyway, you get my point. In over 350 outings, it is very likely that a few of them could rightfully be categorized as at least slightly interesting. So, without further ado, here is my list of favorite field trips taken as a teacher of extraordinary students, and a facilitator of discovery.
