In the 1990s, technological progress was rapidly evolving in Chile, and the inhabitants needed to be up to date with regard to scientific, technological, and educational advances. It was in this context that the project of having a radio on a local frequency and of a modulated nature was born, founded in 1992 in the city of Freirina. The neighbor and science and technology teacher, Don Mario Aguirre Soto, along with his wife and co-founder, Doña Verónica Villarroel Cortes, joined this project.

At that time, there was an amplitude modulated (AM) radio frequency in the city of Vallenar that was heard in the city of Freirina through Radio Estrella del Norte owned by Doña Greta Pizarro. However, Professor Mario understood that frequency modulation (FM) was the ideal option to communicate with the residents and provide clear and simple information.

To carry out this project, Professor Mario worked with his friend, electronic technologist Don Haroldo Cid Zamora. Together, they worked on the necessary equipment for the creation of an FM radio in the city.

On the other hand, during the time that the equipment for the radio medium in modulated frequency was being designed, Mario worked with the technician Jorge Patricio Salinas López, where they managed to present the folder to the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications, to obtain the permits and finally acquire the frequency on the dial 101.9 FM.

Once the frequency was obtained, friends and youth from the community helped place the antenna for the radio, highlighting the great collaboration of Eduardo Gallardo Herrera, who provided technical support within the air spectrum to adjust the new frequency where Radio Labrar would be present. FM.

Mario assumed the expense with the sponsorship of Professor Teresa Cortes Cisternas for the legal processing in the official gazette, to acquire the corresponding radioelectric space to have the equipment turned on emitting modulated frequency waves. After carrying out the necessary tests and complying with the trial period, a significant name for the radio was chosen: Labrar, in honor of Las Torres de Labrar, which were presented as National Monuments through Exempt Decree No. 8377, dated 2 October 1980.

Therefore, this new local radio proposal was presented to the population of Freirina, which began its transmissions as Radio Labrar FM at 101.9 on the dial in 1992.

This means of communication within its objectives was to motivate other institutions that were also dedicated to this activity. Over time, this is fulfilled and new frequencies are assigned to the Freirina commune.
