Sleep and Consciousness

By Mark GrahamPublished 3 years ago 3 min read

Before starting this next BioBases lecture article I realized that I am approaching the end of my notes for this course for there are only four more topics that was covered in the course. I know a few have read these articles, and I hope they were interesting.

Sleep and Consciousness

Things change over time and this defines 'periodocity' that are the laws and rules related to the linear applications dealing with these two topics. Psychology is curvilinear at best and with periodic information there is some behavior of function of the physiological nature as well. Things change over time but not linearly. We will measure from peak to peak the duration of sleep patterns as well as other aspects over a 24-hour period. This is known as the circadian rhythm and in working with the brain processes the brain as a cycle of approximately 23 1/2 hours that will capture the events which are entered in the brain.

There is what is known as the Optic chiasm that is a supra- chiasmatic nucleus that has primary attention to a daily cycle. Zeitgerber will make sure the clock in your head stays on schedule as a daily rhythm like 2 hours, 28 days, 3 months as an annual cycle. There is what we all know as 'seasonal affective disorder' that mean that there is a periodocity that varies over time with curvilinear periodic events that are sorted out and behaviors change over time. The duration of homeostatis and the strategy of balance deals with a certain amount of Oxygen in the blood. The regulation of concentration to adapt for mission critical processes along with periodocity and homeostatis work together to promote life processes. The physical body needs to be kept constant with ranges of duration that is exposed in a variety of ways.

One-third of births occur around 3AM and deaths occur at 6AM. Consciousness is a measurement of brain activity by the ways of an EEG (electroencephalogram) when electrical activity of an area of the brain sees how many axons are firing. The cell activities that are variously done shows a waveform of 35 cycles/second. Alert/awake cycle with one to two cycles of sleep.

Gamma rays for the alert awake cycle help in thinking. Rhythmically smoother 12 cycles hertz for the sleep cycle and alpha rhythm. Biofeedback has phases for the levels of consciousness. Sleep patterns are predictable levels of that are slow for periods for the definable stages one through four. The architecture of sleep is one of deep sleep, dream, REM sleep, till gamma rays to wake up. A long period stage would look like this: 4-1-4-1-4.

What happens when you disrupt sleep? 68% stage one deep sleep. In depression the first stage of sleep is shortened. The purposes of sleep for we all do it for it allows vitamins and minerals and in even odd circumstances and patterns to occur. It also allows adaptation to responses and restoration. There are very few obvious measurements that are different. There are Central nervous system happenings like feeling better but without sleep concentration it becomes harder and hard to focus on things. Without sleep there is some damage to the days' learning and being able to make connections with what happens overnight for animals and humans. Dreaming is possible and gives a purpose for sleep. There are 'prophetic dreams' historically common experiences that there are a lot of attempts for interpretations. Freud and others systems are suspect. The interpretation of symbols that are meaningful or not.

Sleep

This controls have to be complex for the control systems for the information to move in and out. One wrong theory will throw it out of whack. There are overlapping problems like mood and attention that affect significantly as well as many pathologies that affect our sleep. A good place to begin is to deal with the diagnostic problem that relates generally to general health and in psychology it relates to stress and other psychological disorders like anxiety and depression.

To be continued: More on Sleep

(Remember these articles on based on a student's notes from a particular subject.) (I would really appreciate any tip or heart to show me that people are interested.)
