Upper Mustang Trek
Upper Mustang is a unique part of Nepal that feels like stepping into another world. It is hidden behind the tall mountains of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. It was once a restricted area but it still holds strong Tibetan traditions, old monasteries, and a dry desert like landscape that is very different from the rest of the country.
Because it is on the dry side of the Himalayas, Upper Mustang does not get much rain even during the rainy season. This makes it a great place to trek almost all year round. On the way, you walk through quiet villages, old caves and wide open valleys with snowy mountains all around.
The trek begins in Kathmandu, then continues through Pokhara with a short flight to Jomsom. From there, the trail takes you through key places like Kagbeni, Chele, Charang, and finally to Lo Manthang the walled city that was once the capital of the Mustang Kingdom.
Each day of the journey brings something special from quiet mountain paths to prayer flags waving in the wind. The route not only shows the beauty of the landscape but also gives a close look at the deep cultural roots of this region.

What are the requirements for the Upper Mustang Trek?
Trekking in Upper Mustang is different from other routes in Nepal. Since this region is restricted, there are special rules and permits you must follow.
● Solo trekking is not allowed. You must be in a group of at least two trekkers, and your trip must be organized through a licensed trekking agency.
● A special permit is required. This is issued by Nepal’s immigration department under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
● In addition to the special permit, you’ll also need:
○ An ACAP permit (Annapurna Conservation Area Project)
○ A TIMS card (Trekkers’ Information Management System)
● Only Nepal Government licensed guides are allowed to take trekkers into the
Upper Mustang area. Independent or freelance guides are not permitted. These rules help protect the culture and environment of Upper Mustang and also ensure your safety throughout the trek.
