As Russia launches an overnight attack on Ukraine, Trump denies being "played" by Putin. Russia-Ukraine war escalates with new strikes, while Trump defends his stance on Putin amid criticism

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine continues to dominate the global stage. On one side, Russian forces launched an overnight barrage of missiles and drones on Ukrainian cities, killing and injuring several civilians. In contrast, the former U.S. President Donald Trump reignited controversy by declaring, “I was never played by Putin,” in a televised interview.

Overnight Assault: Ukraine Under Fire Again

On April 19, Russian forces coordinated an attack on Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa, three important cities in Ukraine. Although several drones were intercepted by Ukraine's air defense, at least four civilians were reported killed and 18 injured. Thousands were without basic utilities as a result of damage to multiple water and power facilities. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, condemned the attacks, describing them as "war crimes" and pleading for additional international assistance. The bold claim made by Trump: "I Was Never Played" In a recent TV appearance, Donald Trump responded to long-standing criticisms about his approach to Russia and President Vladimir Putin.

Putin never played with me. I dealt with him firmly. He never dared attack Ukraine while I was in office,” said Trump.

The remark was a direct rebuttal to accusations that Trump had shown unusual leniency towards the Russian leader—especially during the controversial 2018 Helsinki summit, where Trump appeared to side with Putin over U.S. intelligence.

Reactions from politics pour in. Trump’s comments triggered swift reactions across the U.S. political spectrum.

Bernie Sanders, a Democrat, stated: “Trump’s cozying up to Putin made the world less safe. Now he’s trying to rewrite history.”

Conversely, many in the Republican camp defended Trump, arguing that during his presidency, Russia remained cautious and refrained from any military escalation in Ukraine.

A Protracted Humanitarian Crisis in the Current War The war, which began in February 2022, has entered its third year. Russian forces continue to occupy parts of eastern and southern Ukraine, while Ukrainian troops fight back with Western military aid.

According to the UN, over 7 million people have fled Ukraine since the war began. Those who remain face daily struggles—lack of food, electricity, clean water, and security. Children’s education has been disrupted, and entire communities lie in ruins.

Trump and the 2024 U.S. Elections

As Trump prepares for a 2024 presidential bid, his foreign policy comments are under a microscope. If elected, he has stated repeatedly that he could "end the war in 24 hours." Experts are skeptical, arguing that the complexities of the conflict go much deeper than a single handshake or phone call. Who Holds the Key to Peace?

The world watches as Ukraine resists and Russia persists. Whether Trump’s words hold weight or are merely political rhetoric is a matter of debate. But one thing is clear: the suffering on the ground in Ukraine continues, with no clear end in sight.

How do you feel about it? Do you believe Trump could have prevented or ended this war? Is there currently a global leader who could alter the course of this conflict? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
