The Strawberry moon has nothing to do with color
Get your telescopes ready because the heavens are about to provide yet another spectacular feat. A strawberry moon is coming but you might be surprised at how this name originated. Many times we pass names, phrases, and slogans down through the generations without ever knowing the origin. The night sky has been revealing many wonders to those of us on the earth. From a lunar eclipse to a partial solar eclipse to supermoons, 2021 been an unusual year for lunar events.The month of June marks the year's final supermoon, with a full "strawberry" moon that will illuminate next week’s night sky.

Blue-Throated Macaws: A Rediscovered Species
I often think about how large the world is and how little we know about it. The critically endangered Blue-Throated Macaw (Ara glaucogularis), found only in Bolivia, is a beautiful macaw from hot, humid lowlands prone to regular flooding. For some years, it was thought to be extinct. Or, perhaps, it was thought not to exist at all.

Plants make people happy. It’s a common phrase that has taken hold in the plant world and for most it is an agreeable and indisputable fact. Fiskars takes this message to heart, which is why they have made it their mission to increase human happiness in and around the home. They know that much of this happiness revolves around plants, and they challenged me to examine what makes us so infatuated with these green beings and how they bring happiness and healing into our lives. Plants have rooted themselves in more than just our backyard gardens and living room jungles, and I have witnessed firsthand how much happiness plants have brought to our lives. But before we dive into it, here’s a short story that perfectly encapsulates plants’ positive impact on one of my clients.

I have lots of tops, dresses and cushions with former lives as curtains, tablecloths and duvet covers. I love a visit to the local charity shop/thrift store followed by an evening armed with my dressmaking scissors (Fiskars are the best!), measuring tape and sewing machine to give a discarded garment a new lease of life. I find the creative process relaxing and therapeutic and it brings me happiness and joy knowing that I have contributed to the charity and helped the fabric avoid landfill that bit longer.

the joy of remembering
As a youth, Lion King was one of my favorite movies. One line that stays with me is the spirit of Mufasa encouraging Simba to "remember who you are." Over the years, there have been many times when I've questioned who I am and where I am going. My process as an earthen plaster artist helps me to remember with a new level of depth. A fountain of happiness is beginning to erupt as I ground myself in a knowing that is free from doubt.

The Threads of My Life...
Imagine a young girl, 8 years old, out at recess. But instead of running and playing with her friends, I am standing up against the schoolhouse knitting. Any free time I had (and this is still true today) I was stitching, sewing, knitting and embroidering all through elementary school. I learned a lot from my mother and grandmother, but my passion for fiber started early in my life and has been the dominant “thread” throughout my life! No matter what stage I have been in (adolescence, young adult, married with a child) I have always created with yarn, fiber, and fabric. Nothing has stopped me!

The Virtual Conservationist
I am woken by the sun throwing its first rays of the day over my face as it begins its slow journey from the horizon to the heavens. Dawn is breaking and the African bush is calling me. I stretch and yawn and throw off the covers. I feel like I’m the only human for miles around. There is no sound except the birds singing their morning chorus and the insects joining in on percussion. I gently sit up, and then creep softly to the shower, trying to preserve the morning calm.

Millennial woman loves avocados: sounds like a headline from the Onion. But I really, really do love them. I didn’t eat avocados every day, but on the days when I didn’t, they were sitting in my fruit bowl waiting to ripen. Just thinking of them makes my mouth water; the buttery taste, the squishy green flesh, the creamy splendour of the really good ones. And yet, despite what could perhaps be described as an obsession with the little green beauty, last year I concluded that I have to give them up. Yes, with a very heavy heart, I cancelled avocados.
