The World is Dying, and it's Your Fault

Commentary on pollution

By Donny FoleyPublished about a year ago 3 min read

The world is dying and it's your fault. I mean it has to be. That's what everyone says right? The businesses, the corporations, the government, any guilt tripping commercial, even the people around you who judge you when you don't do what those big businesses tell you you have to do. They say you need to do x, y, and z in order to save the world! And you try, you really do. You attempt to do your best to use those paper straws. Not use plastic bags, throw your water bottles in recycling, not litter, etc. etc. And you feel great about yourself, you're helping the world, you're single-handedly SAVING the planet!

And then it happens.

One day you pick up that plastic straw because it's all the fast food place had (They'll say it's your fault for not carrying a reusable one)

One day you're in a rush and you grab a plastic bag because it's easier than unfolding the paper one right now. (They'll say it's your fault for not carrying a reusable one)

And now it's your fault, you're the reason the planet is choking on straws.

You're why the world is dying

But you're not alone

They also blame every individual around you

The businesses scold you, they tell you you need to do better.

"Well if you all pitched in and did as you are told we could save the planet, we could make the skies less smoggy, we could make the waters clear, we could even save those turtles you decided to choke by throwing your plastic bottle holders away."

Meanwhile, take a look behind the scenes of those businesses. (but if you look too closely maybe they'll sue you into oblivion)

The deforestation, the immense amounts of smoke being poured out from their factories into our sky, the pollutants being dumped into our rivers, lakes, and oceans, the piles and piles of unrecyclable refuse they dump into landfills every day.

And let's not forget the actual island of garbage floating in the ocean... that's definitely not the companies fault either

BP with that lovely little oil spill that only dumped about 210,000,000 gallons of oil into the water negatively affecting marine life causing their deaths to spike 2-3 times their normal level for several different marine species.

210 million? that's barely a drop you can't blame them!

Pepsico having over 34,000 different plastic polluters coming from their various companies.

Nah not their fault right?

Coca Cola is responsible for 11% of the world's plastic pollution because they don't recycle nor do they keep to their promises because they'd rather throw 17,000 bottles of plastic into nature than be responsible.

They are definitely safe right?

Coca-Cola again for being responsible for 3,224,000 tons of plastic waste in one year (2022). In case you want to know, that many tons is 6,448,000,000 pounds of plastic waste IN ONE YEAR

That many pounds of plastic? Bah, who's counting focus on your stupid little straw

Dow Inc. a company I had never heard of until researching for this post that dumps 97,260,947,708 pounds (based on their toxicity) into our water

Maybe they are the reason? Oh they paid enough money to be ignored by the regulators? I guess they are one of the safest companies then

20 companies are responsible for 33% of the worlds air pollution

Could it be them? No? No I didn't think so either

But no, they say to ignore all that so you do

They tell you the world is dying and its all your fault

All because you used that fucking plastic straw.

Great points, Donny. It's not our fault that the world isn't built to be sustainable, and we aren't running those companies. We can only do so much. I'm only shaming people who litter honestly.
