The storm

The winter storm arrived without warning, casting a heavy silence over the town. Snow fell in waves, thick and fast, blanketing streets, rooftops, and trees, transforming everything into a landscape of pure white. The air was sharp, each gust of wind biting harder than the last, whistling through the cracks of old houses and bending the tall pine trees as if they were fragile sticks.

In the small house on the edge of town, Emma watched the storm from her frosted window, her breath fogging up the glass as she traced shapes on it absently. The world outside looked surreal, as though she’d fallen into a dream where silence reigned, and even time seemed to slow down. The only sound was the occasional moan of the wind and the soft crackling of the fire that she’d stoked just moments ago. She wrapped herself tighter in her worn blanket, feeling a strange sense of calm mixed with anticipation.

Just then, her phone buzzed with a message from her friend, Jonah. “How bad is it by you?” he asked. She could almost picture him in histiny apartment across town, bundled up in one of those oversized hoodies he loved, probably sipping his third cup of coffee. Emma quickly typed back, “It’s like a whole other world out there, everything’s covered in white. You good?”

Jonah replied almost immediately. “Lost power about an hour ago. Got enough blankets, though. You want some company?”

Emma glanced around her dimly lit room. The idea of braving the storm alone all night felt daunting, so she messaged back, “Sure, if you can make it here. Be careful.”

Twenty minutes later, a faint knock sounded at the door, barely audible over the wind. She opened it to find Jonah dusted in snow, cheeks red from the cold, grinning like he’d just conquered a mountain. “You’re insane,” she laughed, pulling him inside. He stamped the snow from his boots and shook his head like a wet dog, sending droplets everywhere.

“I wasn’t about to leave you here alone,” he said, shrugging off his coat and plopping down by the fire. “Besides, figured we could ride out the storm together, like old times.”

They shared an easy silence as the wind howled around them, sipping hot chocolate Emma had made. The hours slipped by in a comfortable rhythm of stories and laughter. Jonah recounted memories from past winters—sledding down the steep hill near the park, slipping on icy sidewalks, getting into snowball fights until they could barely feel their fingers.

Just when Emma thought the storm might be slowing, the wind kicked up even harder, rattling the windows. The lights flickered once, twice, then went out. Jonah pulled a flashlight from his pocket, illuminating the room in a soft glow. “Guess it’s just us now,” he said, chuckling.

They gathered more blankets and huddled closer by the fire, its warmth a welcome contrast to the icy world outside. As the night deepened, Jonah’s stories became quieter, and his gaze softened. “It’s funny,” he said, almost to himself. “Sometimes it takes a storm to make us slow down and appreciate the little things.”

Emma smiled, looking at him. She realized she’d never seen him quite like this before, calm and thoughtful, his face cast in the fire’s soft light. In that moment, everything else faded away—the cold, the darkness, the world outside. All she could see was Jonah, right here beside her, as the storm raged on beyond the walls.
