Promoting Wildfire Resilient Homes
Introduction In response to the devastating Waldo Canyon and Black Forest Fires that struck the Pikes Peak Region, lawmakers have recognized the urgent need to prevent similar destruction in the future. With this aim in mind, a lawmaker representing El Paso County has sponsored three bills to incentivize the construction and reconstruction of wildfire-resilient homes. These bills, if passed, would create programs to study wildfire evacuation, provide grants for wildfire-resilient home construction, and establish a grant fund within the Division of Fire Prevention and Control. A Deadly Lake
There are rivers, lakes, and even waterfalls within our oceans but they do exist because water density can change due to water temperature and sailing levels. Researchers recently discovered another one of these ocean lakes, this time at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico. Unlike most of the sea creatures that wander into it, however, this lake's inhabitants didn't seem to come back. It lies nearly three thousand feet below the surface and is about a hundred feet in circumference and twelve feet deep - making it look like an underwater graveyard. The water in the lake within the sea also dubbed the Jacuzzi of Despair is about five times as salty as the water surrounding it. Meanwhile, the water also has a high toxic concentration of methane and hydrogen sulfide which is why it doesn't mix with the surrounding waters. Partially formed as seawater seeped into cracks in the seabed and mixed with subsurface salt formations, methane gas then bubbled up taking the deadly water with it; hence its nickname, 'Jacuzzi of Despair'.
