Kids enjoy snow days because they get to stay home and be safe. They get to stay in bed longer and stay warm indoors. Winter’s biggest inconvenience is snowfall. No doubt about it. Slippery roads, delayed school openings and school closures. Snowplows on the move getting the snow out the way to clear the roads. Snow can easily turn to ice, which can be very problematic. People walking on sidewalks can slip and fall. There’s nothing like snows day.
Snow days can probably be likened to rainfall. I think that’s the best comparison. When it rains, it can rain heavily without a shadow of a doubt. Snow can pile up on the ground after a period of accumulation. Rain also accumulates. It can cause flooding which is very similar. Water can be very destructive and disastrous. Snow can also be very destructive and disastrous in its own way. The weather is not to be played with. That’s why on snow days people take precaution. Well, at least some do; some don’t.
Snow days symbolize days off from work, school. But there’s many schools and jobs or workplaces that don’t close so easily on snow days. For some jobs, whether it’s rain, sleet or snow, you must show up at work. Some workers try to call in sick and might get away with it. If you work at a place where there’s PTO (Personal Time Off), you’re lit; or you can use your sick days, which works too. Snow days call for laziness and a lack of motivation. However for certain times of the year, it’s the opposite.
During Christmas time, when it snows it can bring nostalgia and a sense of utmost satisfaction. Arguably the most wonderful time of the year. Snow brings happiness during the Christmas festivities. Snow is actually desired around this time. People want it. People thirst for it around this time. When there’s snowfall around Christmas, people simply can’t get enough of it. It’s golden, most especially when it snows on Christmas Day. They call it a White Christmas. Snow is part of the Christmas holiday culture and that’s undeniable. Snow is only experienced in certain parts of the world. Snow isn’t something seen everywhere and anywhere. Snow is a especial feature derived from the cold weather. Snow comes from the sky, clouds to be precise. Snow is soft and is a product of condensation. Snow can melt on your face and taste like a slushy in your mouth. People build snowmen with snow and make snow angles as they lie on the snow. Snow is most enjoyed by the kids. They can’t get enough of it. They love to play with it. They’re obsessed with it.
So snow days are cherishable and short lived. Snowy days aren’t everlasting, so you cherish them when you can. Snow days are days you shouldn’t take lightly. Snow days are days you shouldn’t take as a joke. When it’s snowing and you go out by mistake, you’re gonna regret it especially when you’re dressed in layers or bundle up. Ghana will call it Abrokyire, it snows here and Ghanaians are dying to experience some. They are completely infatuated with it. Ghana will never experience snow and so they’re jealous of us in the diaspora.
There’s a Christmas song that goes, “let it snow, let it snow, let it snow”. Snow is the epitome of Christmas. Snow is beautiful, lovely and makes it a good scenery when it falls on the floor. But it can be nasty when it gets dirty. It looks yucky when it mixes with dirt.
