Moldavite.

Tektites.

By Guy lynnPublished about 12 hours ago 3 min read

Moldavite is a rare, forest-green natural glass (a tektite) formed from intense heat and pressure during a meteorite impact in the Czech Republic about 15 million years ago, valued for its striking appearance and perceived powerful spiritual energy, often called the "stone of transformation," though its intense effects can be overwhelming for some, leading to headaches or anxiety, and it's often imitated due to its rarity.

we, at Wildthingsbeads, could carry this tektite in our inventory as we go to the Czech Republic to buy beads every year. Mostly glass, but we have bought Czech garnet and been offered Moldavite, large quantities of it, some raw, some cut and polishes into gemstone cabochons but Jme has a strong adverse reaction to Moldavite as described above. So we have stayed away.

Key Characteristics

Origin: A meteorite impact event (Ries crater in Germany) ejected melted terrestrial material that cooled rapidly and fell in Southern Bohemia (Czech Republic).

Appearance: Translucent forest green, olive green, or yellowish-green, often with a unique, sculpted texture and flow lines.

Type: A tektite (impact glass), not a traditional gemstone, but used as one.

Spiritual Significance & Effects

Energy: Considered a high-vibration stone with intense energy, often causing a tingling sensation or "Moldavite flush".

Uses: Believed to facilitate spiritual growth, transformation, and connection to universal consciousness. (To be honest, I don’t believe in all that touchy, freely stuff… for each their own).

Caution: Its powerful energy can be overwhelming, causing anxiety or headaches; grounding stones are recommended for new users. ( that’s where Jme’s effects kick in, nausea, projectile vomiting, headaches. ) It is not worth us carrying Moldavite.

Authenticity & Value

Rarity: Extremely rare, found primarily in a specific region of the Czech Republic.

Fakes: Frequently imitated; authentic pieces have specific inclusions (like lechatelierite) and textures. ( even though I have been exposed to a lot of Moldavite, I’m not an expert, and unless I buy it from a Czech source in the Czech Republic I wouldn’t be confident that I’m buying real Moldavite).

Tectites are members of a large group of impact glasses, formed by the collision of a meteorite on the Earth’s surface and the subsequent melting of surrounding rocks. The most famous tectites used as gemstones are moldavites from southern Bohemia in the Czech Republic. These were formed by a meteorite’s impact in the Ries crater in southern Germany 14.7 million years ago, about 500 km from their occurrence (V. Bouška, Moldavites: The Czech Tektites, Stylizace, Prague, 1994). Moldavites are popular for their pleasant green color, enigmatic origin, and interesting etched texture. They are used in jewelry, in either faceted or natural form. The price of moldavite has risen in the last few years, and as a logical consequence imitations have become more widespread.

In fact, moldavite imitations are nothing new. Faceted moldavites were very popular in Czech jewelry during the second half of the 19th century, often with Czech garnets (chrome pyropes) or small river pearls.

Fortunately, the identification of faceted moldavite is simple. Besides their flow texture and abundant bubbles (almost always much more abundant than in an artificial glass), moldavites contain “wires” of lechatelierite, a high-temperature form of SiO2. Lechatelierite is very easy to see with a loupe due to its lower RI.

So buyers beware, probably be wary buying Moldavite from a Chinese vendor at a gem show, as it will probably be fake. Buy from a trusted source with ties to the Czech Republic. Unfortunately that would not be us. Although I wish we were, as I love Moldavite. And it doesn’t affect me like it does Jme.

I use moldavite and tektite to clear negative energy from my spaces, then cleanse them with amethyst and salt.
