The Growing of a Melon
Plans were made to meet at the beach. A short gravel trail led them to an opening at the end of the peninsula. An old dried oak tree, sun baked and withered, was partially dug into the sand. They leaned their bikes and backs against it and began unpacking their bags. Smiles were passed from face to face with the radiant glow of summer sun bouncing off of their teeth in glimmering winks. They were ageless, no signs of life's traumas were displayed upon their faces. The food they unpacked was young and healthy. A container of watermelon slices from a melon with a yellow belly. Sweet loving glances, passed from eye to eye from friend to friend as the juices of the fruits dripped down their chins and the seeds stuck in their teeth. The waves in the distance brought in the smell of the sea. A salty humid air, clinging to their skin, wrapping them into their environment as though they were no more than a stone or a shell. And they weren’t.

If near the coast during a full rip of the subduction boundary, drop everything, pick up the kids and pets, move to high ground, hold on to something that won’t fall on you, and remain calm. The shaking will pass ( so will aftershocks, eventually).

Some Thoughts on Nature and Culture
Just going to toss this out there and get right into it… Animals and plants have culture. This statement is one of my core beliefs and has guided me to include animism as part of my spiritual path. By the current scientific understanding of what culture is, you could easily tell me I’m wrong. (I mean, I’m not wrong, but you could say I was if you really wanted to.) By definition, culture is a human-centric concept held together by “the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group…” Animism asks us to broaden our concept of what culture is to include everything in our natural world — to perhaps expand our understanding of what life, sentience, consciousness, and soul really are. One of the ways we can do this is through immersion.
