Additionally, donning safety glasses and securing the laser gun with a safety clip were of paramount importance. It seemed that even the tiniest oversight could lead to disastrous consequences, as I would later realize when reviewing the footage of that day's endeavors.
In the aftermath of my safety preparations, I found myself grappling with a series of introspective questions. Was I succumbing to an overwhelming sense of power? Could I be trusted to wield a tool of such immense capabilities responsibly? Regrettably, the resounding answer seemed to be no. It became abundantly clear that before I accidentally disintegrated my camera's sensor or set my house ablaze, I should first familiarize myself with the laser's intended purpose.
To understand this machine better, it's crucial to grasp its underlying workings. Enclosed within this bulky unit is the actual laser, and it transmits its power through a fiber optic line as thin as a human hair. It's important to remember that lasers essentially harness concentrated light, utilizing it to melt metal. But just how much light does 2,000 Watts represent? Well, it equates to an astonishing amount of visible sunlight. The laser then concentrates this light to a minuscule point smaller than a pixel on a screen. It's perplexing to some when they witness the laser in action, pressing the trigger and expecting a visible beam, only to find none. However, one must remember that the laser operates in the invisible spectrum, far beyond the range of human vision. This fact underscores the paramount importance of wearing proper eye protection while working with lasers, as the consequences can be irreversible. Our eyes are sensitive to light ranging from approximately 400 to 800 nanometers, but this laser operates at a considerably higher wavelength of 1100 nanometers. Thus, one must never underestimate the necessity of eye protection when working with such powerful lasers.
Now that the fundamental principles were understood, it was time to examine the laser's functionality in various applications. Could it truly weld, as it claimed? Without a doubt, the laser welder proved to be remarkably user-friendly and easy to grasp. Witnessing its seamless fusion of steel pieces silenced any skepticism surrounding the strength of laser welds. In an attempt to dispel any lingering doubts, I subjected a welded piece of steel to an intense battering, striking it relentlessly 50 times, only to
find it unyielding. The laser gun, made entirely of metal, possessed a safety feature that ensured the laser could only be activated when it made contact with the workpiece. This design element prevented any accidental laser beams from harming unsuspecting colleagues. However, it did lead to a minor oversight, as one could effectively "laser" a friend by attaching the safety clip to the laser itself.
Alas, laser welding did present some drawbacks in the form of toxic smoke. The laser welding process generated considerably more fumes compared to traditional welding methods. Acknowledging the potential hazards of inhaling these vaporized metal particles, I took precautions by installing a fume hood to mitigate the risks. Reflecting upon my initial experiences with traditional MIG welding, which had proven to be a true hazard, I marveled at the seemingly effortless welds achieved through the laser welding process. It was during this time that I, alongside my colleagues Willie Mosman, Alan Pan, and Nile Red, undertook the exciting venture of hosting a podcast called "Safety Third." Our podcast involved engaging in various thrilling activities while maintaining a light-hearted approach to safety. This particular project allowed us to create our mascot, the dumpster fire, through the use of laser welding.

Transitioning from welding to cutting was remarkably simple, requiring nothing more than a change in the attachment. However, the cutting mode left me somewhat underwhelmed. While it could indeed slice through up to eight millimeters of steel, its performance with aluminum proved lackluster, managing only three millimeters with unsatisfactory results. The cuts produced were far from clean, offering a marginal improvement over the conventional angle grinder. Meanwhile, plasma cutters provided a more cost-effective alternative, alleviating concerns about what lay behind the metal being cut. Consequently, I found myself inclined to overlook the cutting attachment in favor of other applications.

Nonetheless, a minor inconvenience loomed on the horizon: the need to remove the entire welding attachment from the laser before engaging in the cleaning process. The laser's delicate lenses required pristine conditions to function optimally, as even a speck of dust could have catastrophic consequences, potentially rendering the entire head useless and necessitating the costly purchase of a replacement. The process of swapping attachments involved dealing with screws of varying sizes, a tedious endeavor consuming approximately five minutes of valuable time. Finally, armed with the cleaning attachment, I embarked on the quest to restore a rusty fridge—an endeavor documented in a previous video.
Experimenting with the laser's cleaning capabilities proved nothing short of awe-inspiring. I explored different modes, beginning with the circle mode, which showcased remarkable versatility. It emerged as a well-rounded option for numerous applications. The figure-eight mode, on the other hand, failed to elicit a similar level of enthusiasm from me. However, the line mode delivered concentrated heat, providing superior results. Notably, I exercised caution, regulating the laser's power at 30 to avoid inadvertently melting the metal's surface. A comparison with conventional methods, such as using wire wheels or paint removers, highlighted the laser's superiority in swiftly removing paint from metal surfaces. It proved to be an immensely efficient and effective tool.
Upon closer inspection, the aftermath of the cleaning process unveiled an unintended consequence—the metal had experienced considerable heating, evident from its bluish hue. The temperature of the metal likely exceeded several hundred degrees, a testament to the laser's tremendous heat output. Despite its impressive efficacy in paint removal, one must exercise moderation when cleaning metal surfaces to avoid excessive heat that could compromise their integrity.
The laser's boundless potential intrigued me. It offered capabilities far beyond the ordinary, piquing my curiosity regarding its
effects on more commonplace objects. Recording the experiments in slow motion, I witnessed the laser's power firsthand. A battery, once deemed invincible, succumbed to the laser's might. Bricks, too, proved no match for its intense heat, crumbling within a fraction of a second. The speed and precision were truly astonishing.
Undeterred, I set out to address a perennial household nuisance—cobwebs. Setting the laser's power at 35, I obliterated the cobwebs effortlessly, leaving no trace of their existence. The paint on the ceiling remained unscathed, although some unfortunate spiders met their demise in the process. It was an unequivocal success, save for the lingering evidence of vaporized arachnids.
Taking the laser beyond the confines of the house, I ventured into the realm of yard work. Clearing moss from the pavers became a breeze, albeit one accompanied by copious amounts of noxious smoke. Undeterred, I set my sights on an even larger tree, devising a mechanism—a linear stage with limit switches—to facilitate its precise cutting. Aptly named the "3D printer," this contraption exhibited its prowess as it relentlessly traversed the tree trunk, rendering it vulnerable. Finally, the tree succumbed to the laser's persistent onslaught, crashing to the ground.
Emboldened by my previous successes, I set my sights on a peculiar experiment—attempting to remove ink from a dollar bill. Inspired by a fellow experimenter who had successfully erased pencil marks from paper, I soaked the bill in water and proceeded to erase the ink. To my amazement, the ink vanished completely, leaving no trace behind. Encouraged by this triumph, I couldn't resist the temptation to test the laser on a one-hundred-dollar bill. Although I assured myself it was a mere experiment, the weight of potentially destroying legal tender weighed heavily on my conscience. With trepidation, I embarked on this risky endeavor. The laser, coupled with a steady hand, proved effective, skillfully removing the ink from the bill. However, contemplating the consequences of my actions, I wondered at my own audacity. Seeking to rectify the situation, I resorted to using crayons to amend the bill, albeit with questionable success.
In the end, the laser's capabilities astounded me, transcending ordinary household tools. From welding to cutting and cleaning, it excelled in a multitude of tasks. However, I couldn't help but marvel at the potential dangers it posed in the wrong hands or when mishandled. Laser safety remained paramount, especially considering the invisible nature of the laser beam, which rendered its dangers less apparent to the naked eye. To safeguard oneself and others, the utilization of appropriate eye protection was imperative.
