Hurricane Melissa, Massive Category 5 — Is Helping Greed

Please pray for our people, especially our children, because greed never seems to lose a battle.

Waiting for your destruction —sometimes it is more painful and destructive than the destruction itself. — Annelise Lords

My country is awaiting a Category 5 Storm. Can you imagine the pain and fear?

“Many of these communities will not survive this flooding,” Desmond McKenzie, minister of local government, said at a news conference. “Kingston is low, extremely low … No community in Kingston is immune from flooding.

Jamaica braces as Hurricane Melissa strengthens offshore

The storm, which threatens to dump up to one metre of rain, is moving at a worryingly slow pace.

I live in Kingston near the sea. It would take me about six minutes to walk to watch the sun rise and fifteen to watch it set. I am terrified, maybe it’s because I’m older.

I went through a few of them when I was younger, and I stayed up all night and day until they passed. I have never experienced a Category 5 storm.

Google says: Category 5 is the highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale, meaning it has winds of at least 157 mph. Melissa is the strongest hurricane in recent history to directly hit the small Caribbean nation. NOAA / National Hurricane Center.

The results of the past Storms I have lived through are no electricity for weeks. No water, too. Food shortages — and when it became available, most Jamaicans couldn’t afford the price — so many children went hungry.

Just the threat of a Hurricane and they triple the cost of food.

At the market on Saturday, I had to buy fruits and vegetables for three times the cost it was on Thursday. I ran out of money and could only purchase the essentials. Many of these greedy people are forgetting about the children. They will need to be fed, and with this price-gorging, children will go hungry.

How cruel and thoughtless some humans are to each other.

Hurricanes always leave disasters that take years for the country and its people to recover. Yet many see this disaster as an opportunity to get rich through price-gouging.

Many homes will be destroyed, and many people might not be able to repair the damage for a long time, because the price of home repair materials will triple and likely quadruple. These businesses aren’t the only ones that will increase their prices. The people doing the repairs and the delivery people, too.

In every disaster, humanity will succumb to greed and find ways to profit from the pain, agony, suffering, and destruction of its people.

Hurricane Melissa isn’t only a Category 5 Storm. She is also a route to greed and wealth.

What a horrible world we live in when humans see no problem in achieving wealth from the disaster of their own people.

I am praying and begging my creator for mercy for everyone who has gone through it and for those awaiting Melissa’s impact. Living near the sea isn’t always an incentive. But like all things in life, it comes with a price.

I will be praying for the survival and recovery of everyone who had a taste of Melissa.
