A Short Story

Angels Plan, God Laughs

"Look how high I can go," a young angel soars high into the clouds of heaven.

"Watch me," another one takes off as the first one returns.

"My turn," Kasi says as she ascends higher than anyone else in her clan.

"Whoa!"

"Where did she go?" the young angel asks.

Although this was a usual pastime for the kiddie clan of young angels, today Kasi had enough. As her friends continue to frolic and play, she decides to visit The Most High and make a request.

With her rosy cheeks, dark hair, and strong wings, Kasi arrives in front of the gates of God and is met by a stern but compassionate guard. The guard is wearing a long, flowy robe made of jasmine petals. She towers over Kasi.

"I'm sorry young angel, I cannot let you in at this time," she responds to Kasi's request to see God.

"But I have something very important to speak to Her about," Kasi replies.

The guard is unamused by the young angel's insistence on seeing The Most High. "What could a young, inexperienced angel have to talk to God about? You are still part of the children's clan."

"That's just it," Kasi retorts. "I'm faster and stronger than they are. My wings are bigger and I can fly higher. I don't belong here, I need to go to earth."

The guard chuckles in disbelief as Kasi rattles on about leaving heaven for earth. "Okay, Kasi. I will let you through the gate to speak with Her Holiness if you can pass a test."

Kasi is delighted, "Okay, what is it?"

"Kasi, if you do not pass the test you have to promise that this will be the end of the conversation. You will return to your clan and cease any further talk of going to earth, do you understand?"

Kasi thinks for a moment and decisively responds to the guard. "Yes, I'm ready."

The guard retrieves the holy boomerang from the folds of her jasmine robe and Kasi stares at it in bedazzled awe.

"This boomerang is faster than the speed of light and is designed to come back to me. I am going to throw it. To pass the test, you must catch it before it returns. If you do, I will let you into the gates of God. Are you ready?"

Kasi takes a deep breath and closes her eyes. She visualizes herself holding the holy boomerang then opens her eyes and nods her head yes. The guard throws the boomerang into the air. Before it can get past her, Kasi jumps high, her strong wings maneuvering her exactly where she needs to go, and she catches it. The gates of The Most High open up and Kasi enters.

Kasi walks along the soft clouds made of cotton candy towards the throne of God. She kneels at the foot of the illuminated throne and begins to speak.

"Your Divine Highness, I have dreams of running free, wind in my hair, smiling, and making people happy when they see me," she says.

"Where did you get these dreams, Kasi?"

"I have watched humans on earth and I want to be a part of that," she answers.

"But you are an angel. You will be much happier here in heaven. You still have a long way to go and a lot to learn before you can really understand and enjoy life as a winged- being."

"Your holiness, I am too advanced to remain among my clan. I need a challenge. I want to be an earthling," Kasi whines.

The Most High cannot understand why an angel would want to leave heaven and pleads with Kasi to stay. "Kasi, I need you to understand that this is irreversible. If you go to earth you will have to undergo all of the troubles and pains of that realm. You will be leaving the security of heaven. You will be giving up nirvana."

"I believe I can find nirvana on earth, oh Divine Being. I can find happiness in making other people happy. I just want to run fast, and far, and free. Feel the wind in my hair, the sweat on my brow. Things that aren't available to me here in heaven." Kasi is determined to argue her point and make a case to be born into the earthly realm.

"Is there anything that will change your mind?" God asks.

"Your will is my honor. Free will is my pleasure. My mind is pretty made up, Your Holiness."

God thinks for a minute and then sighs. "Okay Kasi, as you would have it. You are not ready but I have a plan. To earth you descend."

Before Kasi can thank The Most High or utter any words, she begins falling and tumbling down a voided pit. There is nothing around her but darkness. The only sound she hears is the clatter of hooves. The fall seems endless as the sound of galloping hooves gets softer and softer then stops. She is no longer falling and, though blurry, her eyes see light.

Kasi blinks a few times. She looks up and sees a speckled barn owl perched on a wooden ledge high above her. Kasi spots a riding helmet and whip hanging on the wall. She hears a horse braying and the sound of a woman's voice.

"Good girl. Good girl. You did it," the woman says.

Kasi turns her attention to the slender woman with sweat on her forehead who is wearing chaps and riding boots. The woman looks at the beautiful, white foal her mare just delivered and begins talking to it.

"You are beautiful and will capture the hearts of the world. You are going to be a champion, a prize-winning filly," the jockey beams with joy as she looks upon Kasi. "I can see you now. Wind in your hair, sweat on your skin. You will be the fastest horse on the track. No horse will be faster than you. Strong, steady, gallant. You are a winner. The crowds will love you. They will cheer your name."

The jockey strokes the newborn's head. The barn owl shuffles above. "Now, to give you a name." The young filly looks directly into the woman's eyes. "You look like an angel," the woman says. "Should I name you, Angel?"

The two gaze at each other for some time. The jockey is smitten with the new addition to her team. The foal looks up to the sky in gratitude knowing that she is on earth destined to fulfill her dreams.

"I know," the jockey has an epiphany. "You will be called, Nirvana."
