Everest Three Pass Trek: A Real Himalayan Adventure
From the Eyes of a Mountain Guide

The Everest Three Passes Trek is one of the most exciting and challenging treks in Nepal’s Everest region. It’s a 17-day journey that takes you over three high mountain passes—Renjo La, Cho La, and Kongma La—all above 5,300 meters. This trek is perfect for those who want more than just a visit to Everest Base Camp. It offers a chance to see amazing mountain views, beautiful lakes, and Sherpa villages, all while testing your hiking skills and endurance.
Your adventure starts with a short flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, a small mountain town that marks the gateway to the Everest region. From Lukla, you begin trekking towards Namche Bazaar, the main town of the Khumbu area. Namche Bazaar is a lively place where trekkers rest and get ready for the high-altitude journey ahead. You can explore local shops, try some tasty food, and even visit nearby monasteries. If you want a first glimpse of Mount Everest, a short hike to the Everest View Hotel from Namche will not disappoint.
After a rest day in Namche to help your body adjust to the altitude, the trek heads towards Thame, a quiet Sherpa village that feels like stepping back in time. From Thame, the trail climbs higher to Lungden, where you start to feel the mountain air and see fewer people. The next big challenge is Renjo La Pass, the first of the three high passes. Crossing Renjo La is tough but rewarding, with breathtaking views of Everest and the turquoise Gokyo Lakes below.
After Renjo La, you reach the Gokyo Valley, home to some of the most beautiful lakes in the Himalayas. Gokyo is a great place to rest and explore. You can climb Gokyo Ri for a 360-degree view of the surrounding peaks, including Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu.
Next, the trek takes you over Cho La Pass, the second high pass. This one is known for its icy slopes and requires careful walking, sometimes with crampons or microspikes. Once over Cho La, you enter the classic Everest Base Camp trail. Here, you follow the route that many climbers take on their way to Everest’s summit. The atmosphere is full of excitement and respect for the mountain. You will reach Everest Base Camp itself, standing at the foot of the world’s highest peak.
The final high pass is Kongma La, the highest of the three. Crossing Kongma La is a challenging day but offers some of the most spectacular views of the trip, including Lhotse and Makalu. After this, the trek heads towards Chhukung and then back down to Namche Bazaar, completing a full loop.
The Everest Three Passes Trek covers about 148 kilometers and demands good fitness and preparation. The passes are often covered with snow and ice, so proper gear like warm clothing and hiking boots with good grip is essential. The best time to do this trek is in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is clear and the trails are safer.
This trek is more than just a hike; it’s a journey through the heart of the Everest region’s culture and nature. You’ll meet Sherpa people who live in remote villages, see ancient monasteries, and enjoy some of the best mountain views on Earth. If you’re ready for a tough but unforgettable adventure, the Everest Three Passes Trek should be on your list.
