Ornamental (Japanese) Cherry!

(Prunus Serrulta)

Notes taken from:

Vancouver Tree Book,

Pages 176-177!

Tree Article number 3 from Tree Series for Strathcona Conversations Zine!

For those who are just specifically curious about this specific prunus species, you are in luck there is a book on the intense variety we have planted and successfully grown in Vancouver. It's titled Ornamental Cherries in Vancouver by the UBC Botanical Garden`s, Douglas Justice! As for a little background on how they got here for your information now, I can certainly offer something to wet your appetites for your continued adventures in this tree!

Japan sent gifts of Cherry Trees to Vancouver in the early 1930`s. They got planted in Stanley Park. Once they bloomed-WOOSH, Vancity was bound to become a City of Sakura (Japanese for cherry blossom). The Vancouver Cherry Blossom festival encourages the cherry madness with guided tours, parties and more. The viewing season may start as early as October with `jugatsu-zakura` (Prunus Subhirtella). Early spring favorites include Whitcomb, (Prunus Subhirtella) and Accolade, (Prunus Accolade). Yoshino Cherries (Prunus Yedoensis) are famous for hanami viewing parties in Japan, with popular varieties here including Somei-Yoshino and Akebono.

The village cherry (Sato-Zakura) group has Shirotae and the delicately pink- flowered but tough Kanzan which is so widely planted it amounts to more than 12% percent of the City's street trees. With so many types now here you have much available to research and learn about in the book I already mentioned at the beginning of this article!

Its Flower/Fruit!

White or Pink, from 2-4 cm across, usually borne on a shared stalk and in abundance, often before the leaves emerge, so that the crown resembles a white or pink cloud!

Locations for your viewing pleasure!

Oppenheimer Park at Jackson Ave and Powell St has one of the most attractive cultivars, Akebono. But You CAN Certainly find them along streets and in Parks ALL OVER the City! :)

*Note: Check the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival website vcbf.ca for blooming dates and events info!

Poem to go with this tree story:

~All~

All that which is in me,

Is in thee:

If thee want it to be,

For it was from thee

Who has giveth to me,

What I have now taken

With great Passion and Need,

To Continually Feed

That Starving Now Seed:

Which grows on need within me.

So if thee can now see

If you were now me,

All that which was in Me

Was simply a void

Of Nothing…

Which is the Seed

That’s planted within thee,

That is not:

Which was not growing inside

Then me,

Now thee

For it (the planted seed)

Had no need upon

Which it was able to Feed,

So what is in Me

Is in thee:

If thee want it to be,

For All is,

“We”

Which has cometh from

What was then,

Now,

And Always will be

Nothing but,

One Entity

For we were conceived

In the future past,

From “one” Seed

Which grew on Need,

To give us what Today

Is now received:

Through the mind

And the Eye upon which,

All this has now been

Received,

SO what is in Me,

Clearly

You now can see

Is in thee,

Which thus then shall leave

This tale of Poetry

Without the Expected usual ending,

For Now “You”

Have a Seed,

Which is feeding

Off the Need,

Which is from the Void

Which is within thee,

Which was in Me

Which has now begun to Grow

Within Thee,

As soon as these words

Have now begun,

Not Ending….

All that which is in me,

(Is indeed)

Now,

Is in Thee!
