EARTHQUAKE 2023

Turkey & Syria

By Joshua samPublished 3 years ago 4 min read

On February 6, around 4:15 a.m. local time, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck south-central Turkey near the Turkey/Syria border. Just 11 minutes later, a magnitude 6.7 aftershock shook the region. Nine hours later a magnitude 7.5 quake followed

Turkey and Syria border radius -

The Turkey-Syria border is approximately 822 kilometers (511 miles) long. It runs from the tripoint with Iraq in the southeast to the Mediterranean Sea in the west.

The border separates the two countries and defines the extent of their respective territories.

The exact location of the border and its radius can vary in some areas due to political disputes and changes in territorial control. In recent years, the border region has seen significant military and security operations, as well as the displacement of thousands of people due to ongoing conflict in Syria

The death toll in Turkey and Syria surpassed 25,000 people on Saturday as first responders from around the world continue in their attempts to save lives by finding and rescuing people trapped under collapsed structures.

Local reports confirm that the earthquake, in addition to snow, has also interrupted logistical operations, including for emergency and healthcare needs

How long can people survive after a disaster?

Later in the day, a family of three – parents and their 12-year-old child – were saved to the north in central Kahramanmaras. That rescue took place 133 hours after the quake hit.

According to the United Nations, the first earthquake-related aid convoy crossed from Turkey into northwestern Syria on Friday. The region has already suffered greatly from the ongoing civil war – complicating earthquake relief efforts

The earthquake was the most devastating to hit earthquake-prone Turkey in more than 20 years and was as strong as one in 1939, the most powerful recorded there

US Donates to Turkey And Syria -

The Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations, a nonprofit that has provided healthcare services within Syria and to Syrian refugees in Turkey since 2012, is seeking donations to fund medical support in north-west Syria, particularly given the great need in the area

Turkish consulates in several US cities, including New York and Washington DC, are collecting donations for various supplies: blankets, tents, pocket warmers, sleeping bags, over-the-counter medications (cold, flu and over-the-counter painkillers), and winter clothing such as jackets, gloves and headgear.

The organization has also committed $3 million in financial support for response efforts in Syria and Turkey, and includes $100,000 of financial support to AKUT, the leading search and rescue team in Turkey, and $100,000 to the Syrian American Medical Society, which operates health facilities in northwest Syria treating patients impacted by the quake.

Turkey-Syria Earthquake 2023: How to help the victims

For people who have survived, the situation can feel almost hopeless. Freezing temperatures had also complicated operations in the area.

"Look at us. I don't have any shoes. I don't have any water to wash my ands. We have nothing," one woman in Adiyaman, Turkey told CBS News correspondent Chris Livesay. "There are more dead people here than alive. This city is a cemetery."

King thanked for 'generous' donation to DEC disaster appeal

The Prince and Princess of Wales also tweeted that they were supporting the appeal.

William and Kate said they were "horrified to see the harrowing images" in the aftermath of the earthquakes.

Funds will provide medical aid, shelter, food and water to thousands.

UK aid agencies - including the British Red Cross, Oxfam and ActionAid - are joining together to raise money.

The aid appeal was launched by the DEC and broadcast on TV on Thursday evening.

More than 20,000 people have died, with that number expected to rise.

The UK government has announced a support package to help survivors of the earthquake.

On Thursday evening a military transport plane was due to leave the UK for Turkey carrying humanitarian aid including thousands of thermal blankets.

Further emergency aid will include a field hospital with a 24/7 operating theatre, as well as high dependency and general ward patient beds.

Several rescue operations suspended in Syria and Turkey as chances of survival diminish

Germany and Austria have suspended rescue operations in Turkey, citing security concerns.

Meanwhile, rescue efforts in the rebel-controlled areas in north and northwest Syria have ended, announced volunteer organization Syria Civil Defense, also known as the White Helmets, on Friday.

After searching for 108 hours, the group said it believes no one trapped under the rubble is still alive.

Syria has been ravaged by civil war since 2011, and 4 million people were already reliant on humanitarian aid in the worst-affected parts of rebel-controlled country before Monday’s disaster.

As many as 5.3 million people in Syria could have been affected by the quake and be in need of shelter support, according to preliminary data from the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, which has been trying to distribute supplies to vulnerable populations.

The people rescued from earthquake

Three people rescued from Syria rubble 110 hours after earthquake

A rescue team Saturday recovered the body of an Indian man from rubble in Turkey’s Malatya, the Indian embassy in Turkey said. The victim, Vijay Kumar, a 36-year-old plant engineer from Uttarakhand went missing in Turkey in the aftermath of the massive earthquake that struck the country and Syria

20-year-old Boran Kubat rescued from rubble after he shared his location on WhatsApp

WhatsApp proved to be a lifesaver after the messaging application helped to rescue the 20-year-old Boran Kubat from earthquake rubble in Turkey.

WhatsApp assisted in the rescue of a 20-year-old trapped in earthquake rubble in Turkey. A student from Istanbul named Boran Kubat had only recently travelled to Malatya to see his family. The 20-year-old managed to survive the first earthquake, but in the second one, he became stuck behind a building.
