Indian music has two categories namely North Indian music and South Indian music North Indian music is called Hindustani music and South Indian music is called Carnatic music.Southern music is the music studied in the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Mysore. It is important to know the reasons why this music is given the name Carnatic music. Some people mistakenly believe that this music got its name from what we today call the state of Karnataka. In Tamil, the word Karnataka means very ancient. So Carnatic music represents the oldest southern music.
And the name "Karnataka State" has only recently been given; Earlier people called the area as Mysore State.Another news is that in earlier times the entire south was known as "Karnataka Desam".(It is worth recalling the mention of the 'Karnataka Wars' in the history of South India).
Professor Chambamurthy says that the words Carnatic music and Hindustani music are first found in the music book "Sangita Sudagaram" written by Haripala (1309 - 1312 AD).And it is only from the reign of the Mughal emperors in Delhi that we come to know that Hindustani music and Carnatic music are clearly separated. And the music system that is presented today under the name of Carnatic music is the mother of ancient music All researchers agree that this music has evolved over thousands of years.
