Beyond the Edge

A Journey into the Unknown

By Said HameedPublished 8 months ago 4 min read

The sun was a pale disc hanging low over the jagged horizon, casting long shadows across the vast expanse of the Erythrean Desert. Talia adjusted the straps of her pack, her eyes scanning the dunes for any signs of movement. The edge of the map—the point where all known geography ended—lay less than a day’s journey away. Beyond it, no one knew what existed. Some spoke of endless storms, others of a shimmering sea of glass. Talia had spent her life preparing to find out.

Her expedition had begun months ago, a solo venture fueled by a mix of determination and desperation. A cartographer by trade, Talia had grown restless charting familiar lands. She craved the uncharted, the forbidden. The legends whispered in the taverns of Aurin—about the Edge, where the world dropped into an abyss of stars—drew her like a moth to flame.

By dusk, Talia reached the final marker on her map: a crumbling stone obelisk, etched with ancient runes worn smooth by time. She pitched her tent nearby, the anticipation knotting her stomach. The winds howled as the night descended, bringing with it a cacophony of strange sounds. Somewhere in the darkness, a guttural roar echoed, sending a shiver down her spine. Talia’s hand hovered over her dagger, but nothing emerged from the shadows.

As dawn broke, Talia packed her belongings and began the final stretch of her journey. The landscape grew increasingly surreal. The sand turned to shimmering obsidian, and the air became thick with static. Her compass spun wildly, and her map—her most trusted companion—was now useless. She pressed on, her heart pounding with both fear and exhilaration.

At midday, she saw it: the Edge. It was not a cliff or a boundary but a shimmering veil of light that stretched infinitely in both directions. The air hummed with energy, and the ground beneath her feet vibrated faintly. Talia hesitated, her fingers brushing the pendant around her neck. It had belonged to her father, who had been lost to the sea when she was a child. He had always spoken of exploring the unknown, urging her to look beyond the horizon. Now, standing at the precipice of everything she knew, Talia felt his presence more keenly than ever.

Taking a deep breath, she stepped forward. The veil enveloped her like warm water, and for a moment, everything went white. Then, slowly, the world came into focus.

Talia stood on a floating island, surrounded by an endless expanse of stars. The ground beneath her feet was soft and luminescent, like woven starlight. Strange flora glowed with an inner light, and creatures—unlike anything she’d ever seen—darted through the air. The air smelled of ozone and something sweetly floral. She felt weightless, her every step propelling her slightly off the ground.

She wandered, her senses overwhelmed by the beauty and strangeness of this place. The creatures here seemed curious but not hostile. A bird-like being with feathers of liquid silver landed on her shoulder, chirping melodiously. Talia laughed, her fears melting away.

Hours, or perhaps days, passed. Time was strange here, fluid and unmeasurable. Talia kept notes in her journal, sketching the creatures and mapping the floating islands as best as she could. She discovered ruins that hinted at a civilization long gone: towering arches covered in glowing runes, intricate mosaics depicting star charts, and crystalline devices that hummed softly when touched.

One evening, while resting near a crystalline stream, Talia encountered another traveler. The figure emerged from the shadows, cloaked in a robe that seemed to shimmer with galaxies. Their face was hidden, but their voice was warm and melodic.

“You are the first to come here in many cycles,” they said. “Why have you ventured Beyond the Edge?”

Talia hesitated before responding. “I wanted to know what lay beyond the maps. To find something no one else has seen.”

The figure nodded. “Curiosity is a powerful force. But this place is not just for discovery. It is a reflection of the explorer.”

Talia frowned. “What do you mean?”

The figure gestured, and the air around them shimmered. Images appeared: her father smiling as he taught her to read maps, her mother’s tear-streaked face when she announced her departure, the endless nights spent poring over charts and dreaming of adventure.

“This place reveals what drives you,” the figure explained. “Your courage, your longing, your pain. It is both a gift and a challenge.”

Talia’s chest tightened. She thought of her father, of the hole his absence had left in her life. She realized her journey wasn’t just about discovery; it was about filling that void, proving to herself that she could carry on his legacy.

The figure reached out, placing a hand on her shoulder. “You have seen much, but there is more to learn. When you are ready, you may leave. Or you may stay and become a part of this place.”

Talia nodded, her resolve hardening. She would return, not because she wanted to leave this wondrous place, but because the world needed to know it existed. Her maps would be incomplete no longer.

When she finally stepped back through the veil, the Erythrean Desert greeted her. The sun hung low, just as it had when she left, as if no time had passed. But Talia knew better. She carried the stars in her heart and the promise of the unknown in her hands. Beyond the Edge was no longer a mystery; it was a part of her story, and she would ensure the world remembered it.
