A mountain is defined as a high elevation area that has steep slopes and cliffs. Mountains can have many different shapes, but they usually consist of large blocks of rock. They can be flat-topped or rounded, and their heights vary from less than 1 km (0.6 mi) to over 10 km (6.2 mi).

There are two types of mountains: volcanic and sedimentary. Volcanic mountains form when magma pushes its way through the Earth's crust. Sedimentary mountains form when layers of rock break apart and fall into valleys.

Most mountains are formed by tectonic activity, which occurs when plates collide and push against each other. This causes earthquakes, volcanoes, and uplift of land.

Mountain ranges are created when plate movements cause pieces of earth to rise above sea level. These pieces of land become mountains.

Mountains are often covered with vegetation, including trees, shrubs, grasses, mosses, lichens, and ferns.

Some animals live only in mountainous areas. Examples include pikas, marmots, and squirrels.
