US Says Ready To Abandon Efforts To Broker Russia-Ukraine Peace Deal
NEWS
As of April 18, 2025, the United States has signaled readiness to abandon efforts to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine if no significant progress is made in the coming days. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio conveyed this stance following high-level diplomatic talks in Paris involving U.S., European, and Ukrainian officials .
The discussions was hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and aimed to establish a complete ceasefire and secure long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. While Rubio described the talks as "excellent," he emphasized that the U.S. would not continue its diplomatic engagement indefinitely without tangible results .
President Donald Trump, who had previously pledged to end the Russia-Ukraine war swiftly, has adjusted expectations, now aiming for a potential agreement by April or May. However, the administration has expressed growing frustration over stalled negotiations and is prepared to shift focus to other priorities if progress remains elusive .
During the Paris talks, Ukraine proposed implementing a ceasefire, involving a multinational military force, and developing a secure architecture for its future. Additionally, Ukraine and the U.S. signed a memorandum of intent for an economic partnership, including access to Ukraine’s mineral resources and a reconstruction investment fund .
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused China of supplying weapons to Russia, a claim that Beijing has denied. On the ground, Russian strikes in Khar Kiv and Sumy resulted in civilian casualties, with Zelenskyy noting a shift in Russian attacks from energy to broader civilian infrastructure.
A follow-up meeting is anticipated in London early next week, which may be pivotal in determining the future of U.S. involvement in the peace process.
