Here is a novel written by Kristin Hannah entitled 'The Women'. It is a novel of the women who were nurses serving during the Vietnam War. The main character, who goes by the name of Frankie is the focus of the story and how she comes to grips about herself from someone who wants to make her family proud to a person who just wants to be accepted for what she has accomplished. Frankie is a new nurse who decides she wants to serve her country in Vietnam as a way to be close to a brother who was killed over there. She goes even though her parents are against it, and she should just get married and have children as this was the time that women could really only be nurses, teachers or secretaries other than mothers.
Frankie is different and enlists in the Army Nurse Corps and heads to Vietnam from 1966 to 1969 during the fiercest era of that war. Frankie makes friends with two other nurses that encourages in every way in Vietnam and back in the World. Frankie learns and adapts the best way she can, but it doesn't work all the time. Frankie is a Vietnam veteran that just wants to breathe and be welcomed home.
Kristin wrote a novel that will take you back to that time in history with make you smile and at times make your eyes tear at many chapters in this novel. Kristin wrote a book that will make you feel like you are in Vietnam from the dust cover to the real locations in Vietnam like Pleiku, Na Dang, Saigon and even the Hanoi Hilton. Kristin will take the reader to the present when the Wall was built in recognition of all the Vietnam veterans saying Thank you for your service women and men alike.

I think I would thoroughly enjoy this novel, especially since I was a young child and very aware of the Vietnam War (wore a POW bracelet until my soldier fortunately made it home). Thank you for the recommendation, Mark.
