In starting a new project I wanted to know a little more about a certain series of novels. The series is 'The Lord of the Rings' and there is a thin companion guide to this series known as 'The QPB Companion to The Lord of the Rings'. This short academic reference book is divided into sections that talks about the author, the critics, and even the readers of the series.

There is also a section titled 'The Deplorable Cultus' and at the very end after a series of discussion questions there are several maps that the hobbits and others have traveled through the books. In all the sections the writers share their views on Tolkien and what they thought was the major premise or premises of the whole work that they broke down in each part of this book.

Just for the fun of it there is also a crossword puzzle and even a few hobbit recipes that were enjoyed in the series like 'Merry's Mulled Cider' and 'Mirkwood Cookies'. Academically, this companion book also compares the actual world with that of Middle Earth of hobbit lore. The project I was thinking about was to write some lesson or unit plans on the series either for the elementary or secondary level.
