Oh, dear I just can’t–an ABABCDCDC Pollyanna acrostic poem. For me, this is the antithesis of poetry–justa bunch of bright, sentimental, intrusively rhyming kitsch. It sounds like the speaker has never known any real tragedy, and if this is all she (or he) has to deal with in life, this Pollyanna attitude is understandable, but if this is an adult who has experienced real heartache, real betrayal, or real anger, I just can’t buy into this absurdity. Where are the potholes, the mower that won't start, the empty toilet paper roll, the jeans that don't fit. While there's (allegedly) nothing wrong with optimism, this level of it from an adult frightens me.
Also, the underlining of the acrostic letters . . . nooooooooo.

Fiction Workshop Winter Quarter 1998
I had to fight to take the class because I hadn’t completed the prereqs, and it was a 400 level class. I don’t think I knew I was pregnant yet; midterm was in late October, and I got pregnant the Monday after the Fleetwood Mac concert in Atlanta. The two friends I went with were my daughter’s godmothers at her Christening, but we fell out of touch, and neither are part of either of our lives anymore. It was also the Monday before Thanksgiving, which is another story for another day.

I believe you may even more of a curmudgeon than I am, Harper, though I do confess that I am not a fan of tackling an acrostic like a list or the underlining of letters. I am surprised at the depth of your knowledge of poetic devises, however. I taught poetry 25 years ago as a military master instructor at the U.S. Naval Academy, and covered all them comprehensively at the time as well as teaching scansion and modes of interpretation, but a lot of the finer points I have long since forgotten. Do you teach poetry or are you simply very serious about your craft? Your writing evidences a surprising sophistication and an emotional depth as well, which increases my curiosity.
Oooh found this. I knew this existed but then John said he couldn't find it. I am trying to be productive at 2.34 am and compile and make sure I have all the entries so I can read them over the next day or so. Johns already ahead of me. Then we can mark and then choose winners and post the results. Thanks for this I still havent read it properly yet, but will lol. I left the reading until the challenge deadline, so I wouldn't get tied up and could just concentrate better.
