Lovecraft Country (TV Series)
Fact or Fiction? Horror or History?
The television series, "Lovecraft Country" is a horror and historical fiction set in 1950s Chicago. The Freeman family makes travel guides for Black Americans traveling in the pre-Civil Rights era. They quickly learn that they must battle racism by understanding the threatening magic surrounding them.
Once one has stomached the unsettling violence that is inevitably part of such a world, many scenes are uniquely moving. The horror scenes may seem beyond the scope of Black history for those unfamiliar with it. However, these scenes fulfill the purpose of showing the psyche of those who endured American racism in the early and mid-1900s. The overall picture painted by this show inspires the viewer to think deeply about historical narratives, of "magic", and of power. Because the show ended on a cliffhanger, its questions and answers must suffice for its audience, but its contribution to television is for the brave, the Black, and the curious.
