Jonathan Swift was born in Ireland on November 30, 1667. An influential writer of his time, he used satire to protest England’s rule of Ireland. In addition to writing, he was the dean of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. He wrote under pseudonyms, most likely to protect himself from the political conditions of his time and place.

Swift was an Englishman born in Ireland at a time when Ireland was protesting England’s rule. With his father dead, he was raised by his uncle and mother. He attended Trinity College and was studying for his master’s degree when the political troubles of the Glorious Revolution forced him to flee for England. For a few years, he moved back and forth between England and Ireland, publishing from time to time.

During his lifetime, he wrote and published A Modest Proposal, suggesting that the Irish sell their children to the English as food. His intent was most likely to highlight the desperate poverty in Ireland that was caused by long years of British colonialism. Although he probably hoped to change and alert the British government to the plight of the Irish, it had little to no effect on policy. I read it during college, finally choosing to do my senior thesis on it. I found myself fascinated by the idea of the Irish serving their children to the British.

Chatgpt had this to offer, after explaining it couldn’t create a picture of A Modest Proposal since it went against community guidelines.

To be honest, I didn't know much about Swift. I learned a lot!

I’ve learned a lot from it, Reb! Never knew Swift lived in Ireland. Growing up in the Soviet Union, we read Swift as part of our foreign literature education (of course because he wrote satire on the British society) but I always considered him British only. Thanks for your submission!
