Everything wrong with Pitch Perfect

(there are quite a few issues)

By HannahPublished about a year ago 3 min read

1. Jesse

Jesse is clingy with attachment issues; Beca has the ability to go for someone of a much higher calibre, someone who wouldn’t expect her to change who she is as a person - Chloe was right there!

He feels like a stalker - he constantly invites himself into her space (with no consent for this (that we’re aware of!)) and regularly ignores signals that she is not interested in him in a romantic manner. When she proceeds to exist, and continue about her day-to-day life, he perceives this as her being ‘hard to get’, and refers to her attraction to another man as a ‘chess match’. In addition to his disregard for her boundaries, throughout his first real interaction with Beca, she is boiled down to a trope, which is inherently insulting to her personality and style (read: Jesse has never met an alt girl and should have dated Benji).

Finally (but far from being the last of our issues with him), he claims that Beca pushes away anyone who could possibly care about her - but is this why he’s mad? Beca makes the assumption that it’s because she shouted at him (a valid assumption to make), but she doesn’t get it, no, she doesn’t know, and instead of communicating, he shuts the door, and unfortunately does not take the smell of popcorn away with him.

2. The Bellas vs. Bumper

We’re supposed to believe that the Bellas as a group have improved so much that they won the ICCA, and whilst it is obvious that the group have improved under the leadership of Beca, it must be questioned whether they would have won against the Treblemakers if they still had Bumper in leadership. The truth of the matter is that the Bellas have never won in a formal competition that has had Bumper in charge of their opposition, so to what extent should we believe that their group is overall superior?

In addition to this, Bumper leaving left the group stranded, and the Trebles had little to no time to prepare a routine; it can be argued that this is the case for the Bellas too, but realistically Beca may have been working on sets for competition in her spare time in case she was handed the reigns of leadership. This would not have been the case for the Trebles, who seemed lost after the departure of Bumper from their group.

3. How does Stacie turn cuticle care into a hobby?

She has 20 of them, max. She likely cuts them off. Is this truly a hobby?

4. Why isn’t Aubrey in therapy post-pukegate?

How was her therapy not MANDATORY at that point? She likely should have been hospitalised, let's be honest. Additionally, given the time period, it’s wholly plausible they made ‘jokes’ about bulimia following the incident, something that wouldn’t have helped her already unstable mental health and control issues.

5. Chloe’s out of time Miley Cyrus

Picture it: Chloe singing Party in the USA (turned Party on the Bus). Does Chloe pause the song after Beca hesitates to join the singing? With the amount of time between everyone waiting for Beca to join, and when the music would have naturally resumed after a short pause, Chloe’s music would have been massively out of time, something that must have been very annoying for her (maybe she skipped the song altogether?).

6. The JFK High School bag

Why would you assume someone is in High School because their parents are holding a bag from the school? It was a reusable bag. From a younger age. This could be slightly more logical if it were a college student pretending to be a high schooler, but even then, the existence of siblings removes any sense from the scene. If I had to deal with someone turning in a report regarding someone's age in competition because they saw a bag, the person would not be helping out at the next comp.

7. Cynthia Rose & Benji

Co-captains of making other characters uncomfortable. Enough said.
