Whispers of the Forgotten
A Haunting Mystery of Love and Loss
On a frigid October 15, 1988, evening in the sleepy Washington community of Port Orchard, a touching story of charity and a remarkable turn of events took place. Nobody anticipated the strange route this narrative would take, which left everyone perplexed.
Cheryl Petrie, a 33-year-old cashier at PJ's Market, toiled assiduously and had a golden heart. She was renowned for being kind and gentle, always willing to provide a helping hand or a listening ear. Cheryl struggled to make ends meet while juggling two jobs and caring for her two children, a baby boy and a nine-year-old girl. Despite her personal struggles, Cheryl always looked for ways to help others.
One fateful Saturday evening, a college student, a regular customer at the market, approached Cheryl. They had recently moved to the area and had struck up a unique friendship with Cheryl. She had become their confidante, someone they could share their thoughts, worries, and secrets with. Cheryl's warm and compassionate nature had endeared her to this student, and it had become their routine to visit the market and chat with her for hours.
The student was excited to tell Cheryl that they had located a flat in Port Orchard, but they were having financial difficulties paying for food and furnishing it. Without hesitation, Cheryl volunteered to contribute some of her own furnishings and, as a tiny act of goodwill, even gave the student a candy bar for free.
It was not unusual for Cheryl to show charity; it was a sign of who she was. Cheryl, a single mother, frequently contributed more than she retained since she worked so hard to provide for her family. Even though it was the best she could afford, her home—a little blue cottage tucked away in the woods—felt far off from Seattle's busy metropolis. Despite leading a simple existence, Cheryl found satisfaction in giving to others.
Cheryl finished her shift at PJ's Market as dusk set, shutting the doors at 11 PM. Before contacting her supervisor to report a successful shift, she carefully balanced the cash register and made sure everything was in order. Then, at 11:15 PM, Cheryl left the business, intending to return when it reopened at 7 AM the next day.
In the meantime, Cheryl's ex-husband Roland Petrie was hatching a cunning scheme to get her back. He had eagerly anticipated the chance to tell Cheryl about his big surprise. He genuinely thought that this evening would restore their damaged relationship. He had no idea that fate had other ideas.
Roland prepared to carry out his plan, which required saving Cheryl's life, as he looked at his watch after 11 PM. Roland, who had made a buddy during his time in jail, had devised a complex plan including Frederick J. McKee. McKee was supposed to kidnap Cheryl, which would have given Roland the opportunity to intervene as the hero and reignite their romance.
As he saved Cheryl from harm, Roland saw their broken relationship being patched up in her appreciative hug. However, he experienced a brief episode of low blood pressure when he hurriedly rose up in his enthusiasm, which caused him to pass unconscious. As he lay unconscious, his big scheme came crashing down.
In the meantime, McKee carried out the kidnapping without knowing Roland's change of heart or the actual purpose of the scheme. Cheryl was surprised outside her house by the man, who bound her hands and forced her into the trunk of her own car. Cheryl engaged in a brutal struggle while defending her life. In the end, McKee killed Cheryl by using excessive force.
Tragically, Roland's fainting episode had prevented him from trying to save Cheryl. Instead, she suffered a terrible end at McKee's hands. McKee dumped Cheryl's pocketbook in the lake and left her car after killing her close to Lake Union.
Over the course of a decade-long inquiry into Cheryl's murder, Roland and McKee's complicity was shockingly revealed. For their contributions to Cheryl's terrible demise, both men would get convictions. McKee was given a 20-year sentence, while Roland was given a 40-year jail term.
The nation's attention would be drawn to this strange and heartbreaking tale of misguided motives, unbelievable occurrences, and an unexpected twist of fate, leaving everyone in a state of confusion and disbelief. Cheryl's legacy endures as a tribute to her unrelenting generosity and kindness, and the sad events that led to her passing serve as a sobering reminder of life's unpredictable nature.
