The Disappearance of Lars Mittank
One of the strangest missing person cases of all time.
In the summer of 2014, a 28-year-old German man named Lars Mittank embarked on what should have been a relaxing vacation with his friends to Golden Sands, Bulgaria, a popular beach resort along the Black Sea. Athletic, sociable, and working a steady job, Lars had no history of mental illness or erratic behavior. But what started as an enjoyable getaway took a disturbing and mysterious turn, culminating in his terrifying disappearance one that was captured on chilling security footage and has left investigators and internet sleuths baffled to this day.
The Fight That Changed Everything
During his trip, Lars and his friends encountered another group of German tourists who supported a rival soccer team. A seemingly minor disagreement escalated into a physical altercation, and Lars suffered an injury to his eardrum. This injury, while not life-threatening, prevented him from flying home with his friends, as the change in air pressure could have worsened his condition. A local doctor prescribed him Cefprozil, a common antibiotic, and recommended he stay behind for a few extra days to heal before flying. His friends reluctantly left Bulgaria without him, expecting Lars to take it easy and return home once he was cleared to travel. However, what happened in the days that followed was anything but normal.
The Sudden Paranoia
Alone in Bulgaria, Lars’ behavior took a bizarre and unsettling turn. He called his mother, sounding frantic and whispering that he believed he was in danger. He claimed that four men were following him, possibly trying to kill him. His panic was so intense that he urged his mother to cancel his credit card immediately.
Security footage from the hotel where he was staying showed him behaving erratically, he left his room in the middle of the night, telling the receptionist that he didn’t feel safe. He was seen pacing in the lobby, ducking behind furniture, and even hiding in an elevator as if he was being pursued. Eventually, he checked out of his hotel, seemingly too afraid to stay there any longer.
The Airport Breakdown
On July 8, 2014, Lars arrived at Varna Airport, ready to return home to Germany. At first, everything appeared normal, he checked in for his flight and consulted with the airport doctor about his ear injury. However, the situation took a terrifying and inexplicable turn.
During the consultation, as soon as the doctor mentioned his ear, Lars became visibly agitated. Without warning, he leaped to his feet and bolted out of the office. Surveillance footage captured him sprinting out of the airport terminal, abandoning his luggage and personal belongings. He ran past travelers, through the parking lot, climbed over a barbed-wire fence, and disappeared into a nearby forest.
That was the last confirmed sighting of Lars Mittank.
Theories & Unanswered Questions
Lars’ case remains one of the most perplexing disappearances of modern times. His sudden shift in behavior and his desperate flight from the airport have fueled multiple theories, but no definitive answers.
- Paranoia from the antibiotics – Some speculate that Cefprozil caused a rare but severe reaction, triggering paranoia, hallucinations, or even a psychotic break.
- Undiagnosed mental illness – Others believe Lars may have suffered from a sudden onset of schizophrenia or another psychiatric disorder, which coincidentally manifested during his trip.
- He was actually being followed – One of the more chilling theories is that Lars wasn’t imagining the danger. What if someone really was after him? Some suspect he may have been targeted by criminals, traffickers, or even involved in something he wasn’t aware of.
- Foul play – Some theorists believe Lars may have witnessed a crime or gotten entangled in something dangerous, making him a target.
Despite extensive searches and public interest in his case, Lars has never been found. His mother continues to search for answers, hoping that one day, he will be located—dead or alive. His final words to her before vanishing were haunting:
❝ What is this? I don’t know. I need to get out of here. ❞
