The Childhood Redflags Of Serial KIllers.

10 Disturbing Warning Signs.

By Anthony MaghangaPublished 11 months ago 4 min read

Serial killers have long been as much a fascination as a horror for the population as a whole, with the population searching for early indications of violent tendencies. Not all children who exhibit early indications of problematic behavior end up being killers, but research shows the world's most prolific serial killers all demonstrated early indications of the same. Knowledge of these early indications can be the break when keeping them from being able to perform violent crimes. Here's the ten creepy indications in the early lives of the world's most prolific serial killers.

1. Animal Cruelty

One of the more common traits found among serial killers is animal cruelty. Some of the world's deadliest killers, like Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer, killed animals as children after having tortured them. It is generally the prequel to more violent crime because animal abuse can condition people to be immune to suffering.

Psychological Insight:

Children who abuse animals also score low in empathy, a core feature of psychopathy. Animal abuse is also present in the Macdonald Triad, a flawed hypothesis with animal abuse as the predictor of violent crime when coupled with child enuresis and pyromania.

2. Obsession with Fire

Pyromania is also regarded as an indicator in would-be serial killers. It causes them to feel power and control, similar to their subsequent violent offenses. Being a pyrophile is also observed with the "Son of Sam," who as a child started many fires.

Why It’s Harmful

Fire-setting can also be a precursor to great anger and the urge to burn. Research shows that children who set repeated fires struggle with controlling their impulses as well as with being aggressive.

3. Persistent Bedwetting

Chronic bedwetting as a Macdonald Triad factor past the age of normalcy is also associated with emotional disturbance as with later violent offending. As the condition is no more predictive of crime, the condition is more found in abusive child rearing as a causation factor in later emotional disturbance.

Notable Cases:

Serial murderers Ed Kemper and Henry Lee Lucas have been reportedly suffering from chronic enuresis (bedwetting). In other cases, children have been teased or abused because of the condition, which later culminated in violent behavior.

4. Childhood abuse or Neglect

Many serial killers have been physically, emotionally, or sexually abused as children. It is the causation of the early abuse more that leads them toward developing their later destructive behavior.

The Cycle of Violence

Research suggests abused children more likely become violent as adults. Childhood trauma creates psychological injury, which leads to dissociation as well as the inability to empathize—a personality structure shared with serial killers.

5. Social Isolation & Friend Deficiencies

Loneliness and isolation are the normal traits found among teens who turn out to be serial killers. Most of the renowned killers have been bullied, ostracized, or just favored being alone as children.

Case Study:

Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, also came from a socially isolated childhood with no, or at least few, friends. This social isolation set the stage for his eventual radicalization as well as violent behavior.

6. Fascination with Violence and Death

Some potential killers have been morbidly fascinated with death, murder, or violence from a very young age. Some have drawn violent pictures over and over, accumulated guns or other weapons, or fantasized about violent acts.

Psychological Significance:

A persistent fixation with brutality as with gore is a predictor of disorder when accompanied with other signs such as the inability to empathize or being impulsive.

7. Manipulative or Misleading Conduct

Manipulation and dishonesty as a child can be the early signs of being a psychopath. Most serial killers have been described as being highly manipulative with the power of charming people and misleading them under illusion.

Key Example:

Ted Bundy is also popularly remembered as being a people pleaser with the persuasive ability, with which he easily lured his victims toward death.

8. Early Violence Against Other Students

Aggressive acts, bullying, or injuring other children are also a warning sign. Early dominance and brutality and physically or psychologically injuring their peer children were also shown by some of the serial killers.

Why It's Important

Children who apply force aggressively without provocation without guilt can develop as adults with heightened inability to see other people as well as the risk of more violent offending.

9. Head Injuries & Brain Trauma

Several studies have revealed close correlations with early child injury of the head with later violent offending. Frontal lobe injury is correlated with loss of judgement, hostility, as well as with being more impulsiveness.

Case Example:

John Wayne Gacy, the prolific serial killer, also underwent numerous injuries to the head as a child. Some researchers have argued that these injuries possibly created his violent behavior.

10. Early Sexual Deviance

Certain future serial killers exhibit abnormal or violent sexual activity at the early stage. It can be inappropriate sexual contact, being a voyeur, or early sexual preoccupation with violent materials.

Warning Signs:

Early signs of sexual deviancy, when coupled with other signs, can be predictors of later problem-ridden lives. Some serial killers, like the BTK Killer, Dennis Rader, and Richard Ramirez, have been deviant sexual pre-occupants since early childhood.

Conclusion: Can Signs Like These Predict a Serial Killer

While these alone cannot guarantee a child develops into a serial killer, they act as precursors to internalized psychic disorders which cannot be discounted. It is through early intervention with the use of therapy, support networks, as well as aggressive guidance which can deflect dangerous proclivities from spiraling.

Final Thought: Identifying these signs is critical but go with caution. Not all children who exhibit a single or combination of these signs will become a serial killer. But as more signs arise, the application of the psychological test and intervention can deter the risk factors in the future and make the world a safer place.
