The date: the sixth day of Ramadan 2024. The place: Sennar State, Sudan. On that night, the family of the young Sudanese woman Ghufran woke up around midnight to prepare the suhoor meal. When the family gathered in the living room, they noticed that 24-year-old Ghufran was missing. When they went to her room to wake her up, they discovered she wasn't there. It was clear that Ghufran hadn't slept at all because the room was tidy and her bed was untouched.

The family began to suspect that Ghufran had left the house to go to the beauty salon where she worked as a hairdresser. They contacted the salon and learned that it had been closed for some time. Their concern grew, leading them to contact the police, especially after they tried to search for her in the area with the help of neighbors and found no trace of her.

The story began in 2022 when Ghufran was 22 years old. During this period, the beautiful young woman began attracting young men interested in marriage, including a young man named Arif, who was 25 years old and lived in the same area. Arif’s sister was a friend of Ghufran’s and had suggested her to him for marriage. Ghufran’s family immediately agreed after Arif agreed to marry her in about two years, by 2024.

Arif, like Ghufran, came from a simple family and struggled to keep a steady job. Over time, Ghufran began to realize that her fiancé was lazy and didn’t like to work hard. This was the main reason he couldn't keep a job. At the same time, Arif always belittled Ghufran’s work, considering that working as a hairdresser was very easy and that anyone could do it. Additionally, Arif was extremely jealous and obsessed with controlling her.

Arif would physically confront anyone who dared to talk to her. However, Ghufran liked this trait in him, seeing it as his way of expressing his love for her. The conflicts between Arif and Ghufran began when she noticed that he wasn’t doing anything about the wedding arrangements. It was clear he wouldn’t be able to keep his promise to marry her at the agreed time, causing many arguments. Arif had a violent and quick-tempered personality, so their fights often ended with him verbally abusing her, and sometimes even physically assaulting her.

The young woman preferred not to disclose these details to her family, fearing they would insist on ending her relationship with him, especially after his sister convinced her that Arif was in love with her and would change for her. Soon, Ghufran realized that these were empty promises. Arif continued to abuse her whenever she asked about the wedding arrangements. Finally, she disclosed everything to her family, and her father decided to end the relationship immediately in late October 2023.

After the breakup, Arif didn’t stop trying to get back with her. He would stalk her everywhere, telling her how much he regretted it and asking her to return to him. When all his attempts failed, he started sending her death threats via text messages. Ghufran’s family didn’t know about these harassments and threats, so it was natural for them to include Arif in the search for her, which lasted for several days in the neighborhood.

Ramadan ended, and the Eid arrived, bringing sadness to Ghufran’s family, who were still unable to find her. The security forces also hadn’t made any progress. About eight days after her disappearance, there was a breakthrough in the case. Arif had requested the help of a sewage company to carry out some maintenance because the sewage drain in his house was clogged. While performing the maintenance, the workers noticed something blocking the drain. One of them went down to inspect and discovered a swollen human body, clearly belonging to a young woman. The workers immediately contacted the police without alerting Arif.

The police arrived at the scene and arrested Arif, holding him until the body was extracted, which was badly decomposed and mutilated. The investigators noted that the perpetrator had cut parts of the victim's body and mutilated her genitalia. At the police station, Arif confessed to the gruesome details of his crime. He explained that on the day of the crime, he had his sister call Ghufran, asking her to come to the house urgently under the pretext of having a problem. Ghufran’s family had been asleep at that time, so she rushed to her friend’s house, only to realize it was a ploy by Arif to assault her.

Arif tried to sexually assault Ghufran, but she fiercely resisted, refusing to let him have his way even as he threatened her with a knife. This made Arif extremely angry, and he grabbed a metal chain nearby and strangled her to death. After she was dead, Arif took a knife and began stabbing her body in various places before cutting off her breasts and mutilating her genitalia. He then disposed of her body in the sewage system.

Consequently, both Arif and his sister, who helped lure Ghufran, were arrested. They remain in custody as of the filming of this video, awaiting trial. Arif is expected to receive a death sentence.
