With an estimated 250 victims, he is regarded as one of the most prolific serial killers in contemporary history. Shipman was found guilty on January 31, 2000, of killing 15 patients who were under his care. He received a life sentence with a lifetime restriction. On January 13, 2004, at the age of 57, Shipman committed himself by hanging himself in his cell in HM Prison Wakefield in West Yorkshire.
