The unexpected notebook
I have lived a simple life. Simple but flavoured by misery; I was once a successful business owner, and never had to go without, now living in a ridiculously small flat on the second floor with my partner. My partner, Louise and I struggled to make the ends meet after I hit rock bottom. I always wished to make things easier for her, she was always sweet to me. I cried and prayed on my lonely nights, wishing for a miracle that would get us out of this distress. On a gloomy day when the sun tore its misty veil, everything changed like a flick of a switch. Louise was working at the hospital at that time; a mysterious package arrived with no return address. I anxiously chose to open it. There was a hand written letter, a small black notebook, sim cards and an old phone, neatly tucked into the padded envelope. I unfolded the letter, as gently as I could, to feed my curiosity. To my biggest surprise, a check of $20000 fell out. My grin reached ear to ear; I was over the moon, finally I could be useful in something, but I had my suspicions so I decided to read the unknown letter.

One Fine Day
I can’t believe this is happening to me! I thought for sure this was my lucky day, but it has gone to become one giant nightmare. It started when I found that suitcase full of money. $20,000 just laying out in the open. Why did I grab it? Such a stupid move. It was just sitting there in the hotel lobby. A nice blue coloured suitcase that had been sitting in a chair, for what I could swear had been my entire shift. Not a soul seemed to notice it. I should have just took it to the lost and found area. As if I know where that is? Do we even have one? Been working there for so many years and yet I barely even know the place.

Kidnapped
Black, pitch black, I know my eyes are open, yet I can’t see. But I can hear shuffling feet and gruff voices conversing in low tones. I can feel the ropes holding my hands and feet to a chair. I can also feel the blindfold covering my eyes, explaining why I can’t see. While exploring what my senses can tell me I remain calm. Suddenly, a hand is on my head and the blindfold is removed. I can see, it’s not much, just a dark, cold basement with no windows. A musty lamp is the only source of light in the room and out of the corner of my eye I see a door, covered in more locks than at a paranoid survivalist’s bunker.

The Bonnie And Clyde Killers
I cracked my eyes open to see the time 11:30 the clock read. I had only gone to bed an hour before, who could be calling this late I thought, irritably. I picked up my phone and looked at the number, it was the nursing home my mom lived at. It was my mother and me for as long as I could remember If my father had ever been in the picture I had no recollection. I better answer this I thought to myself.

Yet Another Break In
The moment he arrived home from the pub Kyle knew something was wrong. The house looked the way it did every other night. It was just another simple, two story suburban home like every other, the kind that looked absolutely divine when driving past but quickly turned into a soul crushing brick trap after a few months of living there. From the day he moved in it had been far too big for him, too empty, but he always stayed. There was plenty tying him to his own personal Hell: his job, his few friends, and the tiny thrill he got when he came home late at night, just ever so slightly drunk, and to find that things were indescribably, undeniably wrong.

The Old Cobain House
The large old house loomed dark and foreboding with its windows all boarded up and shingles falling off. Sarah and Sasha looked at each other, still wondering if they had made the right decision when they’d told everyone that they were going to stay the night in the old Cobain house. They had even bragged about it, saying that it wasn’t good enough just to go in and look around or even to just have a picnic lunch. No, they had to one up each other as twins tend to do, when telling their friends,

The Picture Book
Arthur hung up the incoming call without looking at the screen. He knew who it was, he knew the few words they’d mutter, then the torrent of anger that would follow when he told them the bad news. He’d tried so hard to get the money but even after pawning everything he owned he’d missed the mark by thousands. Now all he could do was sit on this warm park bench beneath the sun, and think about all of the things he’d miss. Hell maybe they wouldn’t kill him, but he definitely wouldn’t be in a state for any strolls through the park anytime soon. He watched the children playing, the ducks in the pond, and the gently swaying branches for a few more moments before burying his face in his hands.

Data Mining
The unusual request came in the form of a letter delivered straight to Serena Day’s office in downtown Perth. The letter, a simple white envelope, unmarked with any stamps or other identifiers, was stuffed with twenty thousand dollars worth of one-hundred dollar bills, and a small yellowed paper that actually contained the request itself.
