capital punishment
Weigh the pros, cons and controversies surrounding the grave issue of capital punishment; should the death penalty be allowed?
Lifetime Trial Part 3
The Penalty Phase If we thought that the guilt phase and all of the horrors that were laid out before us were traumatic, the penalty phase made them look like a “Nightmare on Elm Street” movie as opposed to the “Human Centipede” that was to come. Many of the witnesses were the same (from the prosecution). The true contrast came when pictures of the black garbage bags that contained the bodies of the children were brought in front of us to view. The descriptions of the scene at the recovery of the bodies only served to add to the repulsiveness of the treatment of the children. A pathologist gave us the results of the autopsies, which were completed with as much accuracy as one could expect from week-to-ten-day-old bodies that had sat in black garbage bags in the Alabama heat for several days. Even more impactful, however, was a taped telephone conversation that the Defendant had with his family a few months after he was taken into custody to await his trial. In it, he stated that the blame for what happened lay with the children’s mother, that his son was just trying to get to her and that is why the crime happened. He took no responsibility for what he had done.

Lifetime Trial Part 2
The Guilt Phase Opening statements had impact, especially for the prosecution. The line about being safe in a father’s arms was the opening line of the prosecution’s opening statement. It was especially impactful to me, as I am a father of four children (all girls between the ages of six and twenty as the trial was beginning). I have a strong belief that fatherhood is a role of discipline, strength and protection. Being a father meant that my children were always safest when with me.

Wrath of the Kentucky cannibal
Since childhood, I have been a fan of old westerns. I enjoyed classics like Bonanza, Gunsmoke and anything with Clint Eastwood, John Wayne or James Stewart. The old westerns were called “Spaghetti Westerns” because they were often filmed in Italy. There are also legendary gunfighters that remain forever in old folklore.

Difference Between Criminal And State Charges
If you have been charged with a crime, it could be either a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on its severity. It can also be classified as a state or federal charge. Congress defines what acts constitute federal crimes and the penalties for each.

Heartless- Divulgence
Upon opening unit 27s door Jay is greeted to an empty dark and ambiguous room. It smelled of dust with a handful of exceptional spider webs randomly arranged in the unit. There was a black folding chair in the very back of the unit with something on the seat. With no light in the unit Jay scrambles and reaches in his left pocket pulling out his phone dropping the note he found in his car. Overlooking the note, he mishandled Jay turns on his phones flashlight and approaches the chair and mysterious object. With every step, creeping closer and closer the black folding chair reminds him of family cookouts from his childhood. Reminiscing about squirt guns and water balloons in the summers of Detroit he notices what's sitting on the chair. It's a napkin. A napkin covering a 4-inch droplet bottle with a note with bold letters screaming "HANDLE WITH CARE". Examining the droplet bottle, it was filled with a slimy substance. Glue- like in appearance but it was more of a liquid then a solid. On the side of the bottle was a red label which read "Substance M". Wrapping Substance M in the napkin for safe keeping he tucks the bottle in his right jacket pocket. Turning to leave the unit and continue on with the operation, he leaves the note from his car behind. He goes into the trunk of his car and pulls out a black oversized hoodie, sweatpants and a black ski mask. He covers what clothes he was already wearing with the loose-fitting hoodie and sweatpants to attempt to hide his identity and starts his journey in pursuit of the final step of this mischievous arrangement.

Ruth Ellis
A little over 60 years ago, Ruth Ellis became the last woman hanged for murder in the UK. Since then, she’s become the subject of television and radio dramas, movies, plays, and books. Why should we bother telling a story of a woman executed over six decades ago?

Who Shot ya?
If any one of you is old enough to be a '90s Hip-Hop/rap fan, the title here would have caught your attention for different reasons, But, unfortunately no, we are not going to talk about the famous (and rather controversial at that time) Notorious B.I.G. song on Tupac Shakur.

The man who loved his mother to death
It’s probably not a stretch to suggest that most people love their mothers. They are the tender women who wipe away tears, put band aids on our scraped knees, and listen to us grumble about our troubles. However, John “Jack” Gilbert Graham didn’t love his mother. He was born in Denver, Colorado, in 1932.

A Familiar Word
How he hated the rancid smell of this place. Prison Block D of Indiana State Correctional Facility must surely be the foulest smelling place in the world, thought Charles to himself. And yet he surprised himself when just moments later he realized that in a scant 24 hours he would give anything to be back in its damp miasma, to experience again the squalid familiarity of his cot on the steel bedframe and the raucous yells of his still-living prison-mates. Over the course of his 20-year tenure in what the guards cheerfully referred to as the “gloomatorium”, his disposition toward his living arrangements had steadily shifted from quiet tolerance to veiled aggravation to outright disgust. It was a strange and unsettling thought that he was actually capable of missing this wretched place.
