Reason First: San Diego May Pay $30M to Family of Black Teen Fatally Shot by Police
Konoa Wilson was 16 when he was fatally shot. The settlement, one of the largest in a police killing, surpasses the $27 million paid to the family of George Floyd.

When a teen is shot in the back by police, dollar figures tend to tick upward almost always. San Diego is set to pay out $30 million to the family of 16-year-old Konoa Wilson who received a cop’s lethal round in January.
This unprecedented amount will never give closure to the Wilson family. It may, however, give them some financial comfort that could pay for scholarships, institutions, and private charities.
Either that or they’ll just blow on rims, ribs, and platinum grillz.
What they ought to do is understand the importance of obtaining land and other intellectual properties.
During their duress, they have experienced the bitter loss of their loved one. In their grief, they ought to be ready to handle the windfall. Though it will never bring Konoa back, it is apparent that they should at least have some modicum of understanding.
Because the young man had been carrying a gun, as the police hold, there seems to be a discrepancy in the way officer Daniel Gold performed his duties. The SDPD claimed that when the officers gave medical aid, they found the firearm.
But that doesn’t gel with the idea of gunning down a black teen in the back. His life could’ve been spared if only Gold had been more careful.
Not even a man, the young boy sustained life-ending injuries. $30 million sounds like a great deal of money, but the family ought to seek even more because it will go…fast.
After they receive the dollars, a trust in Konoa’s name ought to be enacted. They ought to not worry about money, clothes, beers and pig feet.
Instead, they should focus on police reform and encourage police departments around the country to take measures to prevent another killing like Konoa’s.
As they wait to see if they will see the pay day, they should contemplate on whether to open a private school in Konoa’s name or keep the police programs close to neighborhoods. Everyone would be able to engage with police departments and better know the mechanisms of departments.
The way forward is to remember the boy for his virtues while also looking at whatever faults he possessed. Regardless of these shortcomings , he didn’t deserve to be shot in the back.
For the family, they all should get together and find out about the ideas of individualism and capitalism. The whole entire thought process behind treating young men of color as individuals rather than super predators might need to be challenged.
The recognition of property rights also ought to be a fixture in this case. To realize the truth behind this entire situation, it rings true that officer Gold be held accountable for his actions.
It’s almost certain he didn’t wake up the morning of January 28, 2025 and say “I’m going to shoot a black teen in the back today.” But that’s what happened. He should be reprimanded for the pain and anguish he caused.
But back to the money….It should be allocated to help bridge the gulf between the police and citizens after the furs and G Wagons get purchased. After the slave chains get put around necks, they might want to consider establishing land for private parks and libraries.
In the rush to just cash in, they ought to consider the reality of bringing in the nation’s “Finest City” as a shining example of trust for cops.
Despite this grim tale, they could use the dollars to teach police to not be so ready on the trigger and available to de-escalate situations. If the family gets the money, it should be used rationally and selfishly no matter the circumstances.
