Prison Life
"A Look into the Harsh Realities of Life Behind Bars: Understanding the Experience of Prison Life"

The prison experience can vary greatly depending on the type of facility, the inmate's behavior, and the staff. However, there are some common themes that seem to be present throughout many facilities in the United States.
One of the most surprising aspects of the prison experience is the way that leadership and administration often send an overarching message of "This Is A Game, Try Harder To Not Get Caught." This message is often conveyed through the behavior of staff members and the rules and regulations in place within the facility.
Inmates often experience a great deal of discipline, even for minor infractions such as possession of contraband or failing to take medication. These rules are supposed to protect the community as a whole, but they can also be used by staff members with malicious intent to harm the lives of those in their care.
Many individuals enter the prison system with no prior experience with law enforcement or incarceration. They are suddenly placed in a highly controlled environment with strict rules and limited freedoms. This can be a difficult and overwhelming experience, especially for those who are not familiar with the culture and customs of the prison system.
Inmates are under constant surveillance, with staff members checking on them 24/7. This level of policing can be stressful and oppressive, leading many individuals to feel as though they are being watched every moment of every day.
The staff members within a correctional facility can range from typical correction officers assigned to a specific unit, to wardens and administrators. While most staff members try to make life easier for inmates, there are those who take advantage of their power and inflict pain on others. This creates a toxic environment within the prison and can cause harm to those who are trying to rehabilitate and make a positive change in their lives.
The word "correctional" in the term "correctional facility" is somewhat ironic given the high rates of recidivism in the prison system. Correction is not happening effectively, and society is instead asking those convicted of crimes to simply hide their actions better. This creates a cycle of punishment and criminal behavior that is difficult to break.
In my own experience, I have seen the message of "This Is A Game, Try Harder To Not Get Caught" in action. During my first search of my cell at a County Correctional Facility, a staff member told me, "You'll learn the rules quickly here, but don't forget, this is all just a game." This attitude was not limited to one facility or staff member, but was present in many of the facilities I have been housed in throughout my incarceration.
It is important to remember that the prison experience can greatly impact the lives of those who are incarcerated, as well as their families and the larger community. While the goal of the prison system is supposed to be rehabilitation and correction, this is not always the reality. Reform is necessary in order to create a more positive and effective criminal justice system that truly helps those who are trying to change their lives for the better.
In conclusion, the prison experience in the United States is often marked by a message of "This Is A Game, Try Harder To Not Get Caught." This message is conveyed through the behavior of staff members, the strict rules and regulations, and the constant surveillance of inmates. While the goal of the prison system is supposed to be rehabilitation, this is not always the case, and reform is necessary to create a more positive and effective criminal justice system.
